LCD's, need some clarification

i currently have a 19" CRT viewsonic. best monitor i have ever had. the dot pictch is .23H x .27D and 1600 x 1200 resolution.

i went to best buy to use up some gift cards and started looking at LCD's. they ranged from 500:1 to 800:1 contrast ratio, but they all looked like shit. the edges of everything were not crisp etc.

i asked the guy what was the best LCD monitor. he led me over to these 2 sony's that had "xtra bright" technology and had a 12 milisecond refresh rate whereas the others had like a 25milisecond refresh rate. he said that the 12ms rate is what CRT monitors use. these sony's only had a contrast ratio of 500:1 but these 2 sony's looked unbelievable, i might even say better than my viewsonic CRT. the colors were so tru and clear that it seemed as though you were looking at a glass monitor.

i was always told that for an LCD you want the higher contrast ratio, something at least 700:1, and apparently now refresh rate matters. i couldn't pull the trigger and spend the $599 (normally $699) until i researched it a bit more.

i'm looking for some input on what people think about this and if anyone knows of any deals on LCD's (with a 12ms refresh rate.)
