PiMp Hydrogen Ride , BMW E65 745h Concept

BMW is making major progress towards the next generation of hydrogen powered cars. The 745h represents the 6th BMW model to utilize the hydrogen drive technology. BMW claims the technology used in the 745h and other hydrogen models is suffieciently advanced to permit realistic large-scale production. However, hydrogen can only be a sensible alternative to gasoline if the electricity needed to generate it can be produced with renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind or hydroelectric power. Such energy sources combined with hydogen drives would yeild a zero emmission transportation system. Hydrogen burns without generating any CO2 emissions, that is the emissions responsible for the greenhouse effect & global warming.

The 745h contains the world's first V8 that can be powered by both hydrogen & gasoline. The V8 is largely identical to the series production v8, utilizing bi-VANOS, VALVETRONIC and the fully Varibale Intake Manifold to reduce fuel consumtion. The hydrogen fuel source is a double-walled steel tank behind the rear seat-backs. The hydrogen is stored cryogenically - that is, in superchilled and liquid form - at a temperature of around minus 250 degrees. Two safety valves ensure controlled ventilation in the case of excess pressure. They are also part of the comprehensive safety concept which proved its reliability in numerous crash tests. Even in the case of a massive rear-end collisions in which the tank was impacted, the steel cylinder with dual, 2mm-thick walls, did not leak.

A further prerequisite for the introduction of hydrogen as fuel is a filling system which must be no more complicated than filling a car today. The low temperature of minus 250 degrees Celsius requires a special type of filling station. BMW has developed appropriate technology which is currently being demonstrated by the world's first public robot fuel station for liquid hydrogen at the Munich airport. The fully automatic hydrogen fuelling operation takes less than three minutes and is a simple process.

I'd drive it. The problem is theres no hydrogen stations.
Once it gets to be more widespread it will be nice as long as costs are kept down.

Even after the technology is 100% proven and all safety issues as well as consumer issues are worked out it will still be a while until there is a roll out of these gas stations, since it seems all of them will have to be built new, and not just converted or addons to current gas stations. Will be years.

But its definitely cool if they make a zero emissions car with the same HP as a gas car that doesnt increase the danger to passengers during a crash.

            Take Luck!

same bhp on hydrogen ? I'm very doubt it , at least in close ten years.

The new BMW 7 Series has a reliability incidence of an 8 year old Lexus. Not exactly stellar.

Do you even have a clue?

The oil market is ever increasing, especially with China importing more and more to fuel their economy. OPEC has not increased production significantly. It is a market economy. We have to compete with these other countries on the price of oil.'

In the mean time... Bush has tried to do stuff to increase production... ever hear of ANWR? We do NOTHING to develope resources like this and yet whine our asses off then the prices go up.

VOTE for Kerry if you want to see $5.00 a gallon gas in a few years.

I can't believe some of the replies i'm seeing!

First of all, those decals wouldnt be found on your normal model, that's for photo's sake.

Second of all, how could we as responsible human beings not want a car that runs of clean energy and doesnt emit any harmful chemicals into the air?

Hydrogen, unlike oil, is vastly available and would probably be cheap as hell and clean as hell.

Third of all its a BMW 7 series! To me this is a nobrainer!

With gas prices over $2, i think we need to start introducing and embracing new methods of energy. Maybe in 20 years i'll see electric recharging stations or hydrogen filling stations.

everything here is good, the only problem is that as I understand it, producing H fuel requires quite a bit of oil consumption :-( so right now we're not quite winning the war yet, but getting close

Blame Bush for high gas prices. Noone invited him to Iraq.
as much as I hate bush ... china is more at fault for becoming more heavily reliant on oil in the last few years.

as far as a cost for this, the 760hl was only weighing in at about $5k or $6k more than the 760li.... of course that's on $100k+ car. so I bet on a cheaper model the cost difference would be greater.

It would be all of the above right up to the point the energy companies and governments got involved with taxes and markups
