The numbers alone don't tell the full story. I know a guy that was charged with assault for pushing a guy. The fucker didn't even fall down. He just had a hissy fit and reported the guy to the cops. I believe the guy withdrew his complaint, and the charges were dropped. But it does show you the kind of thing that can be considered assault.

We don't have very many shootings. Actually, by australian standards, this past 6 months or so has been rather bloody. There's been about 5 or 6 gang/mob related killings in Sydney, i think.

But still, the numbers make you think. If Australia had a similar gun culture to the US, would the murder rate be as high, or even higher? I don't know.

So the numbers are not comparable.

Here, spitting on someone is assault. It is just a matter of pressing charges.

Maybe Michael Moore is right. Too much fear. You've been watching too much American TV. Stop watching Cops!

Seems that you're more violent than US. We're just better at finishing the job off. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

We are pretty heavy drinkers and Saturday night in most cities is a bit of a blood bath

But it is all broken noses and fat lips...... we dont kill each other!!

You are also likely to be drinking with the guy the next week laughing about it

In the US "assault" is a verbal attack...and "battery" is a physical attack (the mere touching of a persons body constitutes a battery). There may be variations from state to state.

Great - This says that our neighbours to the south have a problem refraining themselves compared to these other countries; or at least it is easier to kill someone because of the wider availability of weapons...

                            Cheers,
