I just run mine at boot and I never turn it off, ever. My stupid exhusband would click on any link or file, in any email or anywhere on the net, so I couldn't take any chances.

It's just one of those deals that hijacks your homepage. If you're running an AV, I guess it would have alerted you. If you're not running one and you have your OS fully patched, you wouldn't get a warning and it probably wouldn't do anything to you, anyway (I guess??).
