I liked Bad education. It's not my fav Almodovar's movie but it's still powerfull.Originally posted by sarah_webinc
I heard a lot of good things about the che guevara film and I very much want to see Bad Education.
I recommend Last Kusturica's film, "life is a miracle", it's amazing !
I suppose it didn't get any prize this year because Kusturica already won the Palme d'Or twice.Last edited by Malkmus; 05-22-2004, 06:17 PM.Comment

For the GFY Rush Limbaugh sheep who like to blindly repeat Rush and claim Bowling isn't a documentary. Stop believing everything Rush tells you and do some research.

It may be a documentary but it's still propaganda in that he only tells one side while ridiculing the other. Basically like Rush Limbaugh but on the other side and with film rather than radio. If you get your info, talking points, or opinions from either you're going to be labeled a brainwashed idiot by the other side.Comment

No. Conservatives should have been getting ridiculed long ago and the media has bent too far over trying to accomodate these lunatics so they can say they presented 'both sides of the story'.Originally posted by jas1552

So you think the left has a monopoly on the truth and you only want the lefts side of things to be presented. Might as well have a dictatorship. Thanks for the info. In the future I'll be sure never to take anything you have to say seriously.Originally posted by dig420

Here's my take. I don't consider myself either a conservative or a liberal.
Moore's film is political. The content is political. No doubt. We all know that. Is it all "100% true"? Probably not. There is probably some exaggeration, truth-bending and the like. "Columbine" was satire/documentary. Assumably this will be to.
Some people probably voted for "Fahrenheit 911" because they agreed with its politics. Others voted for it because they thought it was highly entertaining or whatever other qualities the film is supposed to have. "A great film".
I watched "Columbine" and though I don't agree with much of it as far its conclusions and think it was overly simplistic and narrow - it was very entertaining. In fact, I think of "Columbine" as much more entertaining than educational. In fact, it is very entertaining. So entertaining that it would have been deserving of any award given it including the Oscar it won. I don't have to agree with the film's conclusions or politics to think that. Neither did Tarantino or others.

Show a film to an audience of Muslims that is witty and ridicules Israeli politics and you'll get a standing ovation. Show the same film in Tel Aviv and people will boo and maybe even burn the theater down.Originally posted by directfiesta

I would have an opinion on the man but as this is a film award I wouldn't judge the quality of a work without seeing it. I am not a fan of Charlton Heston as a person, for example, but I will happily admit that is has done some fantastic acting.Originally posted by Pleasurepays

It's a fair argument but most people have some idea of whether they are going to like a film or not. It's quite clear that some liberals already expect to like the film and some conservatives not.Originally posted by sarah_webinc

well, that is fair enough if you are judging if you want to see the film or not but as this thread started off talking about it winning an award that is what I was talking about. How can anyone here that hasn't seen it or the films it was up against it have a real opinion on if it deserved an award or not.
Just like when the Pianist won the Oscar and we had at of people on here who had never seen it saying it didn't deserve to win because of the history of the director. Never mind that they hadn't seen it to know it was a quality film.Comment
-
Simple. The content alone could cause people to form opinions that way. If there were a film that defended slavery and called for its revival many people would say it doesn't deserve an award. If that hypothetical film were made by someone whose last film was called "A defense of the KKK" and our observer thought that the director twisted the truth, lied, and manipulated the audience would you think it absurd that they had a preconceived notion of what to expect and might even pre-judge the film as not deserving of an award?Originally posted by sarah_webinc

Why is it that a politically themed movie can't be good or worthy of celebration/praise?Originally posted by Pleasurepays
no. i could care less what films are up for the award of the "best of the best" or whatever it is .
if a "documentary" can cause such a reaction... then i think given his past, his political views, his political bias and content of previous movies might lead a reasonably intelligent person to deduce that the purpose of the film was not to "document" anything but rather to send a politically charged message.
celebrating films should not be about celebrating political views and political opinions.

Well, this time Moore proclaims he knows the truth. We'll see ...
"Many people want the truth put away, put in a closet and you have taken it out of the closet."
Quoting President Abraham Lincoln, whom he described as "a different kind of Republican president," Moore said, "`Give the people the truth and the republic will be saved.'"

You can clearly see how a man like Macarthy was allowed to conduct his witch hunt in the 50s. there are people here who obviously would like to bring that era back, God knows what the feeling is in the White House for it.
With true freedom of speech Micheal Moore has the chance to make his movie, Bush has the chance to sue him for libel or to explain the lies Moore has told.
In the days of Macarthy there was no such thing as "Freedom of Speech"Comment

sorry to jump in here.. I think Howard would follow America off any cliff, he believes ( and i think there is some truth in this ) that Australia needs a powerful ally like America.. and to turn away from America in cases like this may be repaid in the same manner if in future Australia looks to the US for support.Originally posted by Colin

Bottom line is it's a film about a subject that touches everyone on this planet. It's a film that touches issues that have been purposefully avoided and it's pissed off evil doers the world over.
Who knows if Moore is just pulling people's legs but even the publicity has gotten the world to look and ask questions and communicate. That's what films are supposed to do. That's what a good story is supposed to do.
Often people rag on those who entertain 'conspiracy theories' except when the right wing does it. When the right wing does it and it's honest they're called 'patriot, militia' types. When the right wing does it and it's dishonest it's called 'Rush Limbaugh'.
The equation is simple. Moore made a movie about subjects the other directors were too pussy to touch. Far as I'm concerned the other directors should sit down and wear pink panties for being the bitch asses they are.Comment

Your post is definitive. Moore is about entertaining...making money..and has found his niche to do both and is very good at it. The sad thing is...some people (the uninformed and mis-informed)do not realize this...and think that he presents "truth"...when in fact his forte is satire.Originally posted by Colin
