      Have been there a few times and if your looking just to hang out Carlsbad, CA is a cool place. Lots of food and shops to walk around. Don't know if that's out of your way but...

                About 2 hours north on I 5 will get you there, supposing the traffic isn't too much of a bitch.

                San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Historical District, many, many clubs and bars, malls...BEACHES
