If Demorats want a Democrat for President, they need to decide on a core platform and then find a candidate to best represent that. Preferably he'd have a southern drawl. They'll need to come a little closer to the center, too.
Rallying the party behind a candidate is not nearly as effective as having a candidate that represents the party. Republicans recently went through this with Reagan. Before Ron, Republicans were getting soundly trashed. They took a step back, decided on what their party values and face should be, then used Reagan as the face. With the exception of Clinton, it's been all Republicans since then.
