Do rich people really give to charity, or is that a bunch of bs?

They give to charity to make themselves look good.

That and to give it to the charity instead of the government.

If I was rich I'd give to charity. Nothing like having a college fund named after me

The rich ones that "brag about giving to charity" rarely do, it's the one's that don't wait for a camera to be around or a book to be published that are actually giving.

charity is all used as a write off, it all comes back to them in the end.

Absolutely, and for many reasons. (I'm not a wealthy person, but I spent many years working for non-profit corporations and a bit of time working as a personal assistant to a philanthropist. I've also worked as an independent fundraiser.)

I'd have to say the primary motivation is a sense of duty. Add to that true fondness for a cause, and you have a motivated donor. The tax benefits are probably a big factor, but I don't think they're the greatest motivation.

The opportunity to get the family name on a room, hall or building is also a pretty big deal for a lot of the large donors.

There are many who give quietly to causes in which they personally believe, without an expectation of recognition, but these people are not the majority.

I am sure they do, they get it back in their tax retrun. I read some where Bill Gates gives like 25 million a year to some non-profit org which he or his wife owns...LOL

A lot of them do just to get invited to social functions and charity balls.

If I was uber rich I'd give large amounts the the police fund raisers and political campaigns (all of them). Doesn't hurt to grease a few palms in case the heat is ever on you.

Or people like Oprah have so much money that it would be pointless not to give some of it away to charity. I pay myself first, but then I always run out to pay anyone else.

I have to disagree. I (my corporations) give to charity for the TAX benefits. Not because I have a "big heart".

I wonder how much money charities would lose annually if there were no tax benefits at all....makes you wonder.

I agree, you may have reasons like these to give to charity, but no all rich people think the same..

Tax write off is all it's about.

They love the publicity and being made out to look like good guys though, but that'd have to be secondary.

Well, it depends what you are giving. If you give a charity cash there has to be some other motivation than taxes. If you are in the 35% tax bracket you are only recieving 35% of that money back from the government. Your donation still cost you 65% of what you donated.

Not to mention the people that run the charity organizations and the fundraisers do a better job lining their own pockets than helping 'the cause'.

If you want to give, go to the poor neighborhoods, find a local soup kitchen and give to the poor, skip the middle man.

by in large this is a myth. most millionaires do NOT give to charity. read the book, "the millioaire next door" a large % of those people say that they are thier favorite charities. this is fact, not my opinion.
