Test shots are used to evaluate the model, I agree, but that's exactly it-models portfolios don't contain amatuer shots cuz they wouldn't be able to sell themselves. When one understands photography and developing, one understands that the quality of the photo makes a HUGE difference on the end result. In this case, had the first photo had proper density and color, the model's skin would have looked better. Hell, now a days you can make such drastic improvments through corrections that some models are nothing in real life what they appear to be in their shots. With that said, if you're trying to sell something, use the tools available to you to do so. It's easier to sell a car when it's been washed and waxed then when it's filthy dirty and dull, right?

Point taken, but these test shots are for a customer who actually wants that look. You had no way of knowing that. As for understanding photography and developing, you should probably be aware of a not-so-new invention called digital cameras. I hear a lot of people in this business use them.
