    Outlook Express Rules

wtf is up with this mickey mouse piece of shit Outlook Express? I'm tired of downloading these oh so tricky virus attachments and having to delete them. I set up a 'rule' to not download any attachments, leave them on the server, and shit doesn't work, still get the attachments. anybody know how to do this? all i want to download is jpg attachments, everything else banned.

well, i like the .scr attachments so let's keep those, they're fun to click on.

    thank you
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

yeah but mail comes through 4 different servers, 2 are ISP's, i don't have any control over their mail servers.

Get a program like Mail Washer and delete the virus and spam e-mails before you download them.

Go to download.com type "Qurb" and download it. It's $19.95 to buy but its the best spam filtering software I've found.

ok but why won't Outlook Express block them? It's right there in the 'Rules' - u can check off 'don't download attachments' but it does fuck all. I was hoping i could just keep using OE but it's looking like i'll have to switch to something else.

I also hope you have a virus scanner like norton that picks up the virus and quarantines it before it gets to the inbox. I have no idea why the rules don't apply to those emails that it's downloading but these are the other options.

Are you using any kind of AV software? Norton checks my incoming mail before I get it and scans the attachments, if its a virus it just deletes it and allows all others into my outlook express inbox. Most new AV software does the same thing.

i want to avoid running an anti-virus program, those fuckers are in my inbox - if they just sit there without clicking on them how can they do anything? somebody told me even if you delete them they still can fuck you up.

delete outlook express. Install outlook that comes with office. Use that. It has strong rules. make rule #1 delete all email with attachments. Turn off the preview window.

                        Your done.

                        Add rules to your pleasure.

There seems to be no way to block those 'your document' etc.. type virus attachments, so I have now over 120 'rules' to automatically delete emails with specific crap on them, eg virus or spam. But it only gets rid of 75% or so, even with 120+ rules.

Why is it every time someone has probs with a program or O/S it's not
their fault but the program or O/S is shit.

If your Outlook Express is updated then you put a checkmark on
                            Tools
                            Options
                            Security(tab)

Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
                            potentially be a virus

That is turned on if your a dumb shit and have no idea how to
use a computer in 2004, or what-and-how a virus invokes on
                            a WindowsXX system.

Urban legends like simply downloading the email or viewing with
preview pane open is all bullshit.

A virus attached to an email that is downloaded to your inbox does
nothing. The preview pane open on a virus attached email does
nothing. You have to click on the attachment or save the attachment
and then click on it for the virus to be executed.

A fully updated WindowsXX O/S is the best protection you can get.
Running Norton or other VCs is a waste of CPU, RAM, and load
times. If you have a suspect file then scan it with an online scanner
                            like CA's
                            http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
say "Yes" to the applet download and scan.

Sasser, MBlaster, and Blaster didn't even need an email client, they
just hit you if you were a jerk and don't go to Windows Update. All
three of those critical updates were on Windows Update long before
those virii started infecting users. If you had the update you didn't
                            get hit.

So to finalize...if your dumb turn on the security attachment block in
Outlook Express, buy a router, install mail washer etc, install virus
checkers, install firewalls, install everything you can get your hands
on till your 3.4GHz Pentium runs like a 386.
                            or
Get your Windows Critical Updates and don't click on attachments.

Some good advice, but if I took the time to manually scan every virus I got each day, I'd never get any work done. If AV software slows down your pc then you've got bigger problems than attachments. Simply keep your operating system updated and auto update some good AV software and you won't have to worry about email attachments. It's that simple, no need for rules and no need to install anything else.

100% Thunderbird is a killer mail manager. Took me about an hour to figure out most of the tricks....now it is all i use. You have to be careful some free mail accounts won't work with it.
