Why mpeg in movie galleries and not wmv?

Mpeg, works on a larger range of browsers/systems. Youll notice WMV limits viewing by MAC users without special plug-ins.

In my view WMV is the better format.

Better quality to size ratio then mpeg. Plus it can play as it downloads.

But all the dinosaurs want to stick to thier MPGs. So we must still use them.

We have both options for our members, but .wmv allows them to stream, so it's listed first. Plus, the mpeg files are huge.

actually is not, I am not fully clarified why mpeg instead wmv yet. People seem to have different opinions.

Mpeg is a general video format (most systems can use), WMV is a Windows proprietary format (in theory only windows users can view).

The real reason was already given: MPEG is pretty much universal while WMV is not.

i guess in the end it is really the decision of the mgp owners themselves. It is their traffic etc.

you can also scroll easiy thru and mpeg you cant do that with windblows media video.

At the same time look at it like this, if you were to download a dvd quality rip of your favorite movie "The Matrix". Would you want it in MPG or WMV format?
Obviously most rips come in VCD or DIVX quality but the point remains the same.
WMV plain out sucks, the audio is always a lil distorted and the video can sometimes can look good but it almost always doesnt look as good as a HQ mpg file which is easily viewed and apprecated by your paying member....dont forget, your member is paying for the good shit.

That's not entirely true, you can scroll back and forth through properly encoded WMV files. Also, I didn't say I personally preferred WMV but I think it is a decent compromise between file size and quality.
