My sis is wanting to fake-o tan herself. She tried the Neutrogena spray/foam, but it got orangey and streaky. Poor girl. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if the sell Nivea over there, but they have a good one that just came out ( my meighbour uses it) And I have tried that spray-on tan myself ( the do that in beautysalons) and that works fine ( I prefer the natural tan myself, somehow you can always see that it's fake)
Hope that helps you a bit in your search -
Yes, they do sell Nivea here. Thanks for the info! So maybe she's better off getting a salon to do it for her. She's tried the tanning beds, but she doesn't like to get freckles, not to mention the C word.
Come on, there's gotta be more women on GFY who don't just bake in the sun all day. We're keyboard jockeys, no?email: [email protected]Comment

Have her try out Mystic Tans
I have used it several times and it works GREAT!!!! It doesn't give you the "orange" look that the self tanners have.
There is also a product by a company called Toma that has a good self tanner as well, but I can't remember the damn name of it.Comment

The salon solution is really great. They spray it on you with a tool bodypainters use as well. And your tan grows over a day, at first it's just a bit, but the next day you have the Cali look.Originally posted by Elli

when you do a mystic tan on fresh skin it looks amazing
even better than a real tan
after a few days it begins to fade and be splotchy. no matter how hard you exfoliate and moisturize you can not get it even enough to do another mystic tan over. you will look hideous if you do..
i have never figured out the trick to having a continuos mystic tan
but i love the fresh one-time mystic tanComment

elli, let me know if you find a product that works, i assume she has the same light skintone you and i share.
i've tried all sorts of self tanners and they all leave me orange, and i hate the disease infested tanning beds.Comment

i forgot to add that chlorine and mystic tan do not mix. it immediately bleaches out unevenly. so don't go near the water with a mystic tanOriginally posted by m00d

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I looked into that Mystic Tan, but have heard from another model that it's rather expensive and difficult to maintain nicely.
My sis is nowhere near as pale as me. She got mom's complexion, not dad's.
But she wants to golden it up a bit from her winter blah's without hitting the booth or the beach.

As a fair skinned woman, I try to avoid the sun without sunscreen of atleast spf 15. But I do at times need a little color so I will use some self tanner. I like the convenience of the mystic tan and the fact it is so evenly spread, but its a little pricey to continuosly spend $20 a session. As for at home products, I have used the Nutrogena spray and have found the best results come from a good exfoliation beforehand and then have someone help you apply it evenly. The final thing is thant after you have applied it take a towel and dry your elbows and knees and lightly go over your body with it to get any excess...as for other at home products that are reasonably priced an work well, I'd suggest Bain de Soliel and Banana Boat...they've all worked for me quite well.Comment

Every self tanner I've tried looks fine on me and doesn't turn orange. Right now I have Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Dark and it works well. Yeah you're supposed to exfoliate well, and then rub the lotion in really well to avoid streaks. I apply the tanner right out of the shower like a moisturizer. They also make some tinted tanners so that you can make sure you have it all rubbed in, so you don't get streaks. And use sparingly on elbows and knees and ankles.Comment

I don't use them anymore, but the best I ever used was Victoria's Secret. Below that was Coppertone Endless Summer. All others were pure shit in comparison.Comment

Look, she's not going to say "Oh hey, those guys on GFY are right. I shouldn't try to tan at all." No, she's decided she wants to do this, and she was just wanting tips from people who have experience with the products.
Thanks to everyone who has posted! I'll let you know how it goes

I have used a product call JanTanna and it works great for things like photo shoots or special events. It gives you a great, dark tan with only one application and it also smells great! But, the down side is that it doesn't last long, only a few days. Hope this helps....

Hi Elli,
I purchased the Tan Mist from an informercial I saw on TV and it is awesome. I guess it's like the Mystic Tan thing but you can spray it on yourself at home. It looks so real and it's so easy to apply. The only problem I've found is it makes a mess wherever you choose to apply it. I spray it on in my shower but it seems to cover my entire bathroom. I've stopped using it for that one reason. Applying it outside might be the best thing to do.
For a cheaper alternative, Loreal has a new tanning gel that I've used and it doesn't turn you orange. It works really well.

I'd agree with Neutragena being the best cost-effective tanner. Este Lauder and Lancome self-tanners are the best home tanners that don't stink (although cost more).Originally posted by aimeesweet

I've also used Mystic Tans, and at $20 once every week or two, I think it's worth it to avoid the trouble and time of self-application, not to mention it turns out perfect much more often than when you do it yourself. You can also get packages that lower the price.
Recently I used Loreal's Sublime self-tanning lotion, and it looked good for about a week but then faded kind of weird... it might have held up okay if I'd reapplied, though.SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.Comment

Every time I used to use sunless tanner it would look like SHIT when it was fading, especially behind my knees, since I guess I bend them a lot, it would get sort of white there while the rest of my legs were still tan and it would just end up real blotchy and it's hard to exfoliate it off. I do know that you are supposed to exfoliate beforehand, and I always do, but it just fades horribly.
If you are really into sunless tanning check out the msg board at Sunless.com http://sunless.com/phorum/list.php?f=1Last edited by phogirl69; 05-18-2004, 07:56 PM.Comment
