Spam blocking software: One that's even better than Mailwasher Pro

I've been trying out SpamFighter (spamfighter.com) and it's pretty awesome.

The main differences between SpamFighter & Mailwasher are....

    Mailwasher:

I have to manually add domains to the blacklist any time I get a spam from a new domain. I add an average of 50 new domains to the blacklist every day, (and my list is a mile long now after using this for years)

Mailwasher runs as a separate program from the email client.

Mailwasher checks your mail on the server BEFORE you download anything to your computer.

Any domains or individual email addy that you blacklist or whitelist are unique to your system only.

    SpamFighter

    Integrates with your mail client.

Downloads email to your system first. Can't see the email on the server first.

Also can blacklist individual addys or domains at will. Addys you block/ban go into their system and are also blocked from every other user of the program. This results in virtually ZERO spam coming through to you because the more people that use the system, the better filtering there is. Sort of a collective filtering.

When first installing it, it's a good idea to go through your contacts and old emails and whitelist every addy and domain that you WANT to get email from, because after I installed it, I sent a test email to myself, and it didn't come through. Which means, I'm in their system as a spammer. I know what the reason for this is. Some spammer asshole has been forging my domain headers and spamming as me, using my domain. The downside to this is, anyone else using SpamFighter will not be getting my emails unless they whitelist me. BUT, I still believe this is the best spam blocking program I've ever seen. But users of it need to be vigilant in whitelisting their contacts.

it's an excellent blocker in my opinion. It has nearly completely eliminated spam coming through to me.

I knew it was only a matter of a very short time before someone felt the need to chime in with this.

But what you fanatics can't seem to understand is, alot of us are absolutely NOT interested in using that Netscape/Mozilla crap.

I love knowing the fact that every spam that DOES get through, once I block them it adds to their system so all the other users will never get that shit from them. That's even better than the Mailwasher bounce feature.

if you want to be added to their system, sure. Go for it. But if you're a spammer, odds are you're already in there.

Amp, you probably don't have the latest version of Mailwasher Pro-- Which has all the improved features.

IMO, Mailwasher Pro is better than Spamfilter in that it:

? Has the same ability of Spamfighter to syncronize the spam database with the database of other users. Plus, Mailwasher has a far larger database, since it's a very popular program.

? I don't think Spamfighter works with any other email client... We all know all the newbies and soccer moms use Outlook.

? Mailwasher has a type of "Bayesian" learning feature, which will automatically detect if a mail is spam or not.

... And the list goes on.

The feature I most loved about Mailwasher is that you check your email while it's still on the server, and it lets you know in a glance if there is a virus embedded. This way you can blacklist the domain without every downing that virused crap to your system. Eliminating the need to run resource hogging anti-virus programs.

Just set up server-side spam blocking, then set up a few rules in your email client and spam is no longer a problem. Very few spams get through to me now and the ones that do are sent directly to my spam folder for me to review whenever I feel like it. Why download the spams in the first place? SpamAssassin is your friend.

that's the whole point of this thing. The spammers that are in their system (and more being added all the time by every user) never even hit your server. The ones that get through go straight to a spam folder for review. Add them to the blacklist, and you're done. Of the hundreds and hundreds of spams I used to get with Mailwasher (adding more than 50 new domains to the blacklist every day), I have only had 6 get through to me so far using SpamFighter. That is a massive improvement. (And now all of those are in their system too)

That is a massive improvement. (And now all of those are in their system too)

domain blacklisting is the only way to win

you can beat bayesian filter but you will need a new domain all the time

okay, of the 300 you sent, they all got through.
All 300 of them went straight to the Spam folder.
Three clicks is all it took to eliminate that problem:
                                                      1) Edit > Select All
                                                      2) Blacklist > Domain
                                                      3) Empty Spam Folder

those will never get through again.

but that's what I'm saying.... those domains will never come through again, and it adds them to their system so that all other users will have them blocked as well, unless they have one (or more) on their whitelist. Whereas Mailwasher was effective in blocking them, it was only on the one machine using Mailwasher. (your machine)

Unless they've changed/upgraded their program recently to incorporate some sort of central db like this.

Something else for you guys that are going to try this out and are switching from Mailwasher....

if you go to the Options for SpamFighter, click on the Blacklist tab, then click the Import button.... browse to the Documents & Settings folder on your c:\ drive, go to Application Data, go down to Mailwasher, and there resides your Mailwasher Blacklist. You can import the entire fucking thing into Spamfighter.

if you want to import your whitelist, you'll need to copy and paste them into a new text file and save that, then import it, because the whitelist (Mailwasher) is in the same file as the blacklist. (either at the top or the bottom depending on your version)
