Anyone on the South Beach diet?

I'm starting it soon. I just wanted some initial feedback from people on it. How does it compare to Atkins?

Supposedly its better than Atkins. Atkins works... I lost over 30 pounds in 3 months. Problem was... my cholesterol level shot up.

im surprised to see this for a smart guy liek yourself 5$

heres a absolutely sure fire way to loose weight

go for a brisk walk twice a day and expend more calories than you consume.

It absolutely is that simple and you don't need to be telling people you are on any fucking gimmicky 'south beach pleated cotton pant' diet or similiarly ridiculous crap designed for the brainless

peace out and thanks for all ya normally very informative posts

Thanks, man but the person who recommended this diet is my wife's physician. I'm a member of a gym and do 1 hour cardio 3 times a week (only started again recently though). I'll try for a purely vegetarian diet. So hopefully this results in permanent weight reduction without boosting cholesterol.

South Beach is just a modified Atkins/low-carb style diet. Nothing magical about it - except some might be able to stay on it longer because it's a bit more relaxed. You cut way back on all the bad carbs (white foods: sugar, white flour, rice, pasta) and focus on lean meats, tons of veggies and some complex carbs. Focus on the low gycemic index foods and exercise and you'll lose weight...

Worked great for me. Lost 30 lbs in 3 weeks. The first 2 weeks are like atkins. I'm telling you that the first 3 days are so fucking hard, because your body is craving carbs big time. After that, you get really bored by the end of 2 weeks, but then you get to add in fruits and stuff.

It basically teaches you how to eat right. I've been on it for months, but I really don't even think of it as a diet anymore, just smart eating. I know if I really want a candy bar, I can have it, but I have to make up for it the next day.

40 lbs off and keeping it that way. Best of all my cholesteral is great too!

Good luck, just remember to be a carb nazi the first 2 weeks and all will go well.

Thanks for the feedback, bro. Very informative. Im gonna brace myself for the first week. Hopefully, with 4 days at the gym per week and this new dietary lifestyle, I'll be on the road to better health. My metabolism has slowed as I got older and the sedentary work (being in front of a PC 16 hours a day) definitely had health consequences.

                    Thanks again, Spanky!

fuck all those bullshit diets man youll gain your weight back garaunteed.

                      why?

cause its not a normal way to eat.

the ave male needs 1800 to 2400 calories a day - depends on your height

2000 calories a day is what the ave is for a 6 ft male

females need 1400 to 2000 per day - depends on height

youll lose weight (slowly though) just by cutting back on your daily caloric intake without exercising.

if you add light exercise everyday like walking youll lose more per week.

if you do a vigourous workout everyday or a few times a week youll lose faster.

                      .

as a personal trainer i have to agree with what a few others said here...

fuck those canned diets. i don't even bother with them.

carbs just so happen to be a very important aspect of your diet. there are generally 2 types of carbs from a broad perspective - good carbs, and bad carbs. bad carbs are usually found in things like junk foods, good carbs are usually found in things like natural foods.

                            1. increase consumption of natural foods (fruits, vegetables, pastas) and decrease consumption of junk food.

                            2. eat at least 5 times a day, smaller portioned meals - this makes you actually burn more calories because the digestive processes must work more (which require energy, calories).

                            3. exercise. your body is meant to be exercised - if you don't use it, you lose it. work in resistance training (freeweights) and cardio - and try to make it to the gym at least 4 times a week.

follow those very basic steps and you will do fine.

I hate even calling it a diet. As I said in my post it's not for me, it just reminded me how to eat right.

I totally agree that you have to exercise. What I am saying is that I lost the weight without it. I now have added it to my lifestyle.

As for being a personal trainer.
If I ever meet 2 personal trainers that agree on anything, I would be truly amazed. Every time I have used a new one, they always say the last guy didn't know what he was doing. Exactly what is the degree you need to be one?

The south beach diet, like all diets is a crock of shit. As said earler, eat healthy and workout. Anything else is a waste of time. This "diet" is just a marketing business, not based on scientific fact. Parts of the book (like not eating a lot of sugar) is probably a good idea and other parts are just shit.

Even really, really stupid diets like Atkins will find someone you know who swears by it, as any diet (even the worst) usually work for a while because people are eating less calories.

If you want to diet, count overall calories NOT carbs. A calorie of steak or a calorie of wheat is still 1 calorie and it doesn't really matter much which you eat as far as loosing weight.
