Has anyone ever purchased one of these? It would be nice to have one in your car while you drive and have the ability to take it out on road trips with friends.

yes, they are very good for traveling.
there are many different uses, for street travel in USA, a laptop, the usa street software, and the delorme serial connection gps is very good.
for aviation and boating i think garmin is the best.
if you are just looking for a cheap gps with a map go to ebay and get a garmin emap or etrax---very good 12 channel receiver---works best with external antenna in the car. -

works very good, and is cheap compared to other portable GPS systems. that combination costs like $500Spank me
