        tar -cvf file.tar directory

        would be better IMHO

          tar czf directory.tgz directory

is even better since it will zip the tar file as it is made, thereby saving disk space

the v can be dropped (in czvf) if you don't want it to spew all the filenames out during hte making of the tar
