A couple of things...
The depth doesn't seem right for him to be aiming at the kid. Look how big the guy with the gun is and how small the kid and parents are. Plus any scenario I was ever in I wouldn't aim at the bags I'd aim at the fucker holding the bags. To me it looks like he's covering his buddy who's searchind someone on the ground in the foreground of the pic. That's why his finger is off the trigger.
Also... are you sure that's an American soldier... no kevlar cover and wearing some fucked up cold weather gear I've never seen before. US soldiers wear cutting edge GoreTex. I've never seen an M16 stock that looked like that. Also the bipod on the front of the rifle isn't US issue. There's other shit too but... that's enough for me to doubt it's an American.

These pictures are very interesting in that the explosives can be easily concealed. Also notice the nails and hardware added to the explosive devices and the cell phone in the brief case. Pictures of bombs currently being used by suicide bombers in Israel.
Below are a number of photos released by Israeli Anti-Terrorist personnel at the Worldwide Conference in Charleston, South Carolina. All photos depict the real stuff being used against Israel and through out the mid-east by terrorists.

Actually that's not true. One of my mother's best-friends son is over in Iraq. And, he said you can't trust the kids, because they'll come up to you with a brown bag or something and sometimes they'll be bombs, other times, a soda or something. Soldiers were also told to aim at anybody that runs up to a tank with a package in their hands. But one time on a convoy, he had like a 6 maybe 7 or 8 yr old kid come running up to the tank he was in, and he was the gunner on top, and he had to point the gun at the kid the whole time, but that kid had a brown bag in his hand, so he didn't know what it was.Originally posted by MaskedMan

What if the kid ran towards the soldier with something in his hand, and the photographer just took a snapshot right when the parents came and grabbed the kid?

(2) His hand is clearly off the trigger with no intent of firing and probably doing this so that there is no accidental shots fired.
(3) Look at the position of his head/arms and body, why would a trained solider be standing in this position if he is infact trying to intimidate or do anything further to the family.
Basically what it probably all boils down to is that this picture was taken out of context and spread over the Internet to stir outrage among morons like some of the members on this board.
