    About interrogation methods of detainees

    The word "torture" has been thrown around alot since the now "infamous" photos have been displayed.

    Though interrogation methods used by the US Army is not in my field of expertise...having gone through the Army's SERE School I am somewhat familiar with the methods used.

    Having said that...prepping those that are subject to interrorgation is SOP. Prepping does not include actual physical torture...although some methods may actually be physically painful in the sense that it will tax the muscles of ones body. Physical torture "bamboo under the nails" type of thing is not allowed and it is not productive...because the reliability factor of information obtained through the use of physical torture is low.

    Prepping does include...a certain degration factor and a certain deprivation factor...in order to break down ones mental resistence. Subjectively some may call the levels of these methods "abuse" and others may in fact call it "torture"...but none the less there exists SOP for the interrogation of prisoners...and it is a necessary thing.

              theking, you can start by explaining to us to what kind of torture did SERE's training prepare you for. What kind of torture they used on you?

                  I dont see a big deal with what has come out so far. The media is just looking for a scoop to fill their 24 hour news channels with stuff people will watch.

                  Just remember, the people in those prisons are the types that lit a civillian convoy on fire and then mutilated the charred corpses.

                                      No...I was not...but there is a story that the Marines used to have a similar school that was shut down because they in fact did sexually abuse. Unless the situation has changed the Marines still attend the Army's SERE school since theirs was shut down.

                                                  According to all the public testimony and the military's internal report the soldiers/contractors treatment of prisoners was an aberration of standard procedure.

                                                  At this point it is unclear about the motivation behind the tolerance of the abuse of prisoners; however, the information in your paragraph actually undermines your theme.

                                                              There's a difference between sexual abuses and the other methods you mention. Sexual abuses can have a forever lasting effect that'll make many go completely crazy.

                                                                  It is my understanding that the soldiers involved are MP's so yes it is an aberration as MP's via SOP are not to be involved in interrorgations but are to be only the keepers and escorters of prisoners...thus any "prepping" would subject them to violations of the UCMJ.

                                                                  Contracted civilians are not subject to the UCMJ. It is my understanding there are reported beatings...intterogators are not allowed to do this...and it is not allowed to subject them to actual acts of sexual abuse but to sexually humilitate them to some extent...may be debatable if and when these matters reach the court.

                                                                          It's a shame they don't have people like you as brains of the government. They couldn't think of such justifications but they had to outright apologize and accept what is wrong.
                                                                          Only if they knew there is someone out there who is able to produce "valid" excuses/justifications for every wrong-doing happening.

                                                                                          I don't even consider this to be news yet, and I find it amazing that some people actually believe Rumsfeld should be fired over this. It's like firing the CEO for what a mailroom employee did.

                                                                                          .... and I'm still waiting for proof that TORTURE and great PHYSICAL ABUSE took place. Because the only thing I see so far are photos like a prisoner being led around on a loose leash. Yeah, that's real painful.

                                                                                          This news spinning is a disgrace to every American who has been tortured for real as a POW. I'm sure they'd take posing nude over having their bodies bent in half any day.

My post is about the word "torture" being bandied about...by many that have posted since the release of the pictures. I personally have only seen one picture of someone that looks as if he was tortured and in fact he appears to me to be dead. If this was done by American Soldiers or by Contracted Interrogaters or by fellow Iraqi prisoners...I do not know. These things are being investigated.

                                                                                              The quotes below are from one of the released prisoners.

                                                                                              "We are Muslims. We don't go naked in front of our families. But there we were, naked in front of American women and men," he said, adding that this treatment went on for about four hours as punishment for beating a fellow prisoner suspected of spying for the Americans."
