The irony is that the spam is being mailed off of servers in countries that need the money the US would hypothetically be saving to donate. The US has tons of people in its own country that need help, yet our tax dollars keep going everywhere but where it's needed. Money saved in the US isn't guaranteed to go where it 'should' go. There's a lot of wasted money flowing through the US. For example... millions and millions spent everyday in the justice system on frivelous lawsuits and prosecuting ridiculous things like possession of marijuana. If you send out 1 spam mail to 10.000 people, and they spend in average 5 seconds on that email it has a total cost of about 350$

I hate spam as much as the next guy but these numbers are just utter bullshit. It is completely unrealistic to multiply the minutes wasted x the number of people recieving spam and come up with some 1000000 gazillion dollars per year estimate.
Along with hundreds of millions of other people worldwide, I waste my time by picking my ass from time to time but you don't see front page news crapping on about tight undies costing us billions of dollars a year.
