Could this picture stop the US Invasion?

I am referring to the picture of Lynndie England holding a leash attacted to the neck of a naked Iraqi prisoner.

It is on the front page of today's Toronto Globe and Mail.

There are probably few here who were alive almost 40 years ago, when one of the most famous pictures ever taken appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world. A naked Vietnamese girl, about 10 years old was pictured running down a dirt road, fleeing from her village that had recently been dumped with nalpham.

After seeing that, public opinion in the US turned to a belief that their presense in Vietnam was wrong.

Could this picture cause US public opinion to swing to a belief that the American presense in Iraq is wrong?

You forget that, right or wrong, a lot of people associate Iraqis with terrorists. I'm sure there are lots of people that will look at that picture and gain some satisfaction from it. Especially people that lost family members on 9/11.

Seeing how the two events are probably totally unrelated, that doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of people will feel.

Actually, this is one of the highest forms of humiliation for a Muslim male. Being naked in public, and being dominated by a female.

Stories are coming out that the soldiers were actually training to do this by the "experts" in the US military. I can't find the story on-line; I would have liked to have posted a link.

For the most part, I've been quiet up till now.

Most people criticizing things going on over there at least speak intelligently about it, or admit they don't know what the hell is going on and I can respect that.

What I can't respect are you ignorant bleeding hearts that have no f'n clue what the hell goes on during war, think you have all the answers and act shocked over these mind games that are being played on the prisoners.

That's all they are... mind games. A woman treating a muslim like a dog. That's just about as insulting as you can get to a muslim. Dogs are considered the lowest form of life - heathenly beasts, and women as you know are ranked just slightly higher. I think this move was brilliant. Allowing an outsider to photograph it, not so brilliant.

Yep, that sure was insulting, maybe even traumatic, but that's all it is. They aren't spreading bio-fucking-toxins on them like these idiots did to their own people just a few years ago. This is actually quite funny. As shocking as the images can be, if you read the Red Cross report, it is much much worse and damaging.

Also, the fact that the new pictures again shows the same small inbred female soldier was done only to reinforce the idea that the abuse was done by a dozen people only

Most of you approve the act? Incredible. I remember not so long ago some US soldiers were captured and everyone cried here, and as far as I remember there were no war crimes committed against them. (not sure about that though).

You all must realize there's rules to warfare, they SHOULD be followed. Apparently not, and it's not a big deal. right? Why aren't the fine men and women fighting for your...I mean their freedom be allowed rape and pillage too? After all, the evil arabs are doing it too, aren't they?
I'm slightly disgusted. warcrimes aren't a laughing matter, the ones committing the act should be punished.. not a slight slap on the wrists either.

The "rules" of warfare in the last 100 years have been edited down to one word "WIN". To term having prisoners put into cold cells for days or held on leases naked like dogs as "war crimes "IMO is absurd. War crimes is genocide, execution, cutting off parts, hot tongs etc. Mental anguish is part and parcel of warfare and being a POW, and I personally see nothing wrong with extending less than complete rights to POWs. The real problem here is the USA military did not have a well formulated plan to manage these POWs. The enlisted soldiers who were charged with the responsibility of managing these detainees were ill trained and were getting conflicting guidance from their leaders and others like the CIA. For the record, I am against the war and I have a very liberal background , including schooling at Cal-Berkeley and a four year stint doing Criminal defense work for indigents. Looking at these actions of the US military, I think that there has been a serious case of lack of leadership here and someone high up in the chain will ultimately have to fall on his sword to satisfy the international media bloodlust over this matter.

If you take the viewpoint that atrocities will happen because its war, then what is the justification for the US being in this war if we cannot be held to a higher standard? You cant say we are in this war for WMD, you cant say its because we are getting back at them for terrorist acts, the sole ground we stand on is that the USA is getting rid of a dictator and freeing a society. We are nation building, but to do so rests on the premise that our nation is superior. If we are not superior, but are instead a nation that finds it ok to commit atrocities because "it's war" than why is it valid for us to believe we should be the ones to create new societies in our image?
