i'm pretty sure they only charge for job listings....the value is based on the huge amount of daily traffic the site gets

craigslist which started in san francisco is the #1 resource for nearly everything in the bay area. i dont think its an exaggeration to say 4 out of every 5 people i know in SF found their jobs on craigslist. Most Bay Area companies dont even bother posting jobs anywhere else.

In addtion, all classifieds are free so everybody posts and it makes for a great classified community

The only things c-list charges for are job postings and personals

It's huge in NY and LA as well. It would take something drastic for Craigs List to go down in traffic... unless Google tries to mimic it CL will be here for the long term.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

it's popular here in Toronto as well, same thing: college-aged crowd. Very good for apartment rentals, cheap stuff. Valuation is difficult though as they don't seem to have a marketing plan?

I love that site. Thats how I got my first apartment and furnished it, and re-sold my furniture after I moved out.
Ill never forget the day before I moved out I just put a listing on craigslist and all my furniture was sold and carried out in less than 4 hours. It was awesome.

In san francisco during the dot com boom craigslist was the only way a lot of people could get an apartment

Shit.. that's what Craig's been busy on for the last X years!!

I used to meet up with Craig at a few of the first webmaster shows - he was playing with his list then along the lines of adult personals and also doing some "moderate" adult sites. He had loads of confidence in his vague list idea and I thought - not a hope in hell! BIG mistake! :-)

Some folks take a different path in life and do well :-)
