No kidding...I sometimes wish I could go back to the relative ease of a "real" job.

Those days where at 5 pm I'd walk out of the office and not look back. Enjoy nights out with friends, girlfriends etc.

Now I spend 12-14 hours a day and there have been times 20 hours a day in front of this computer trying to build my own wealth instead of someone elses.

Most people are here because they cant hack a real job.

I guess it depends on how you define being able to "handle" a "real" (wtf?) job. I could "handle" being wedged into a strict 9-5-with-an-hour-for-lunch environment. I could "handle" doing bullshit, mind-numbing work 90% of the time, only to be expected to (and capable of) taking over my boss' job if he/she were for some reason incabable of doing it (for no more pay, mind you). I could "handle" being far overqualified for most of the work I did, because my "real" job was never my life.

I see people in "real" jobs who are killing themselves, literally, doing work they hate, always chasing after the next promotion and ultimately being reduced to dreaming of retirement - which may never come.

How on earth is that preferable to working for one's self, to taking full responsibility for one's own future? Anyone who is capable of making self-employment work has no need to worry about whether they can "hack it" in the "real" world.

Now, if you're talking about people who make beer-and-ramen money while getting high off their own supply and playing keyboard warrior, that's another story...but IMO those people aren't "hacking it" in this biz, either.

Sorry if I've totally misinterpreted your point, but the idea that a steady, guaranteed paycheck somehow validates one's living has pissed me off since I was about 12, and that was a hell of a long time ago.

People are here because they have so many problems dealing with a common job.

Oh, now you're making me nostalgic. Five o' clock, hit the bar with friends...yeah, I remember that. And then I remember that I NEEDED to hit the bar, because I was so damned stressed out...

I've had some really good jobs, and I've worked with and for some great people...but in my experience, the better the job, the more likely that some asshole will come on board and completely fuck things up within six months to a year. I just can't deal with that any more.

They're not.

There are a ton of people in this industry just barely getting by, people who lie, cheat, scam and shave trying to make every penny they can because they can't even handle submitting 2 galleries a day because it's too much work.

It's those people I'm talking about. They can't hold down a job for 3 months so they get into the adult biz hoping for easy money.

I'm not talking about the people who own adult.com here.

There are people who know what it takes and venture out on their own and make it happen.

Then there's those who put off submitting their gallery until tomorrow because they can't be bothered when there's a good show on.

Do I think being able to hold down a real job means something? hell yes, it does.

Absolutely. I did the corporate thing for three years before quitting to run my own business. I made great money in my old job, but it was just like the movie Office Space. Eight managers but no real leaders.

We have such a short amount of time in the world, why would you want to trade that to work for somebody else? I'm much happier running my own business, even though I made far less money in the beginning.

Don't disagree at all...except that I still take exception to the suggestion that self-employment - be it in porn, high-interest credit cards, cheap prescriptions, cookbooks, or turbo-widgets - is somehow not a "real" job.

I think it's a bit of both but you have to be dedicated to do this full time and make a good living! I do have to agree with Diabolical Cord with the lack of social interaction.

I some times wonder as I'm sitting in my office surrounded by staff and being pestered at what they should do next why I bother. Don't make any money and the last time I got fucked by a model, The Bay City Rollers were in the top ten.

Newbies give in now there is zero chance of making money in this business as a photographer, you're better off doing something challenging. A job that comes with a uniform, options and decisions.

Like "Would you like a large or medium fries with your big Mac sir?"

This is something to do with why I work in this business. But I have had jobs and worked just fine having someone tell me what to do, I don't really mind as I am easy to get along with and I don't have a problem with discipline. However, ask anyone and they will tell you they would rather work for themselves.
