If the US wanted to destroy Iran's Millitary capability, they wouldn't need to occupy Iran. One base of operations, no matter how unstable it currently is, is enough in the middle east. Iraq/Kuwait provides enough land to marshal and base US Millitary.

Obviously it would be much more difficult to occupy Iran. I just don't think there would be any need to.
