Portability is an advantage. I can take my VoIP gateway anywhere in the world with a high speed connection and I'll keep my local 514 number.
You can take this device, something like this http://www.dialpad.com/products/ata186.html
plug a network cable into it anywhere you are at, plug your phone into it, and call anyone in the country free ?

It's a feature that varies from one carrier to the next. My carrier provides me with a gateway. I can take my gateway to France, plug in a phone and a high speed connection and I'd still have my home phone number. So I'd be able to call people back in Montreal for free.
Asuna, the quality is great. You can't tell the difference. I've got Videotron Cable, 5.1 mbps, and there's no noticible change in connection speed.

WTF. You don't get free long distance? You just get to call people in your area code for free even when you are not there, but thats it? I don't travel so I'm just making sure because that wouldn't help me.
fusionx- vonage is like http://www.dialpad.com/ only its a monthly fee instead of a per minute fee ?

Thanks guys.
Like I said, it varies from carrier to carrier. Some offer long distance calling for free, others don't. I could get an unlimited long distance package, but I don't need it. I pay 5 cents a minute in Canada and US if I need it.

For those who are curious, I did some searching and found that for an additional $20 CAD a month, I could get unlimited long distance in Canada and the US.
