no where to run... we're sitting on rocks in the middle of the ocean. And if it ever is real, the roads here would be gridlocked with people trying to get up on the volcano and away from the wave. So it'd be pointless to try and go anywhere. Basically, it's just a heads up to stick your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye. Tsunami's suck.
Not too worried about an air raid. I think we've advanced enough technologically that any MIGs entering our airspace would be dealt with before they ever got close.
Why do you live on Maui?
Do you like big houses? Not much party places there is it?
Maybe you hob-nob with rich tourist?
Actually, I have quite a few reasons.... some of them are,
I came here from the San Francisco Bay Area, and I left there because I was sick and tired of the city and all the freaking traffic. It used to take me 2 1/2 hours to get to work 15 miles away. So O'ahu is definately not where I wanna be.
Maui has more beaches than the other islands, and I think they're nicer as well.
We get far less rain on the south end here than O'ahu or Kaua'i.
There's nothing on Lana'i or Moloka'i and the Big Island doesn't interest me at all. I took a mini-vacation there last year, and yeah, the resort was nice, but still, nothing but lava for as far as the eye could see, and no beach.
Maui is more relaxed. We don't have freeways or skyscrapers or the local bad boy attitudes like O'ahu. Everyone here is friendly. It's so relaxed that when the celebs come to stay here right down the street at the Grand Wailea or the Fairmont Kea Lani, nobody bothers them. And that's why they come here. To get away and relax and have no one hounding them for autographs and interviews and shit. Britney Spears goes to the same nail salon my girlfriend goes to. We did a purchase loan on another house here for Sammy Hagar. Oprah is building a house here, Kris Kristoferson has a house up on the volcano, Kelsey Grammer (sp?) has a home here, Nick Cage comes here quite a bit, Helen Hunt, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Anthony Hopkins, etc.... and no one bothers them. That's a place where I want to live. Where no one bothers me. (granted I'm not a celeb, but you know what I mean)
It's more expensive here, and there are far less stores to choose from..... I have to order nearly everything online.... but everywhere has it's cons.... I think the pros of Maui far outweight the cons.
I like living right next to the beach here in Wailea. The area is beautiful. I can see the ocean from my deck, and walk to it in a minute. I couldn't do that on O'ahu.
oops, I forgot.... no, there isn;t much nightlife here. There is some though.... if you want to party, you can find it. But that's okay with me because I don't really like to party anymore. I don't enjoy clubs and that whole scene, and so I don't miss it at all.
Originally posted by DirtyWhiteBoy What kind of prices do you pay for things living in Hawaii? Rent, food, gas... that kind of shit.
Gas: $2.43 for regular 87 octane. (and rising)
Rent: Not sure, I own. But you could probably get a crappy 1 bedroom 750 sq ft apartment for around $1100 a month.
Food: Depends. Some things are normal, some things are outrageous.
Dairy is insane. Meat is pretty expensive. Beer is about normal, maybe a little higher. I would say our average run for groceries to Costco & Safeway (need both) per week hits around $400 - $500 depending on what we buy.
Electricity is freaking ridiculous. Hitting an average of around $220 per month. That just running the basics: Refrigerator, washer, dryer, computers, and tv. Not running the ACs or anything else. The water heater is solar, so that isn't even included.

Shit!!
What are property values like? For example whats a modest house in a decent location go for?
but living here also has other essential expenses that other places may not.
Regular exterminator service: A must. It's the tropics. If you don't have an extermintor visit regularly, you will have roaches, rats, spiders, scorpions, ants, and centipedes.
If you own a house, you need automatic (or manual) sprinklers, or the sun will kill your lawn and trees and plants in a week.
If you have coconut trees, (like I do) you need the coconuts chopped out every six months, or they will start falling and damaging shit and killing people if they land on them.
Wet gear: No point living in the tropics if you don't have some boards, snorkel gear, etc.

Wow. Here we run the refrigerator, washer, computers and TV (we don't watch much) and it's something like $25. We don't have hot shower.

it truly depends on the location. (somewhat). The general rule of thumb is, the closer you are to the beach, the higher the prices go. But it also depends on the area. So for example,...
A nice new home (average... not too small, but not big either) in a gated community in Wailuku here (the business hub) runs around $400k to $500k roughly I think. Nowhere near the beach.
Down here in Wailea, they fluctuate wildly. In my community, they run between $800k and $1.5 mil. Across the street ON the beach, they run $10mil on up.
The bottom line to all of this is, it all comes down to what you place value on.
One person may see a $3000 set of golf clubs as a necessity, where another person will see it as a total waste of money.
You can live in South Dakota in a house for probably $50k, and spend the rest of your cash on whores, clubbin', spinners for your pimp ass ride, fancy fuckin' shirts with flames on them, and big pimp hats with 24" feathers in them. If that's what you value, then that's what you should do.
Personally, my priorities are on the idea that you should live where you are most happy. Yes, it's expensive as hell to live here. But I can't even imagine living anywhere else anymore. I love the ocean, I love the island, I love the life, I love it all. And I will most likely live the rest of my natural life here. I don't care about appearing like some kind of pimp, I don't care about fancy expensive clothes, I don't care about clubbing or impressing the hoes, I detest jewelry.....
I am truly home. And I am happy.
Now if I could somehow beat this bipolar insanity shit, life would be grand.

Yesterday we walked on the beach all the way down to the Kea Lani & back ...took like 3 hours.
yeah, I'm kicking myself for not.... I wanted one of those banana things you made last time.... I loved those! But I got wrapped up in something dumb here, and spaced it out.
When's the next opening of Club Jason? I'll be there.
When we moved here we paid 2x the price of our Phoenix house for a house that's 1/2 the size & 2x as old.
...but we're living in paradise right across the street from the beach. Can't beat it.

The only way to rid that bi-polar thingy is to baptise yourself in Hanauma Bay. It works!!!!
I live in Waikiki because I will have a brain hemoridge if I go more than 3 hours without seeing some Japanese pussy.
Wakiki joke : "Why can't you get a good blowjob in Japan?"
"Because all the 'cock suckers' are over here".
Fuck electricity here! I pay out the butt for nothing, I don't even have AC and my bill is sky high. Lucky for me I'm on a high floor so I don't need AC. Of course that means leaving the hahahahahahas open when I'm fucking but what the heck we're all friends here.
I still like to hit the clubs too, but I don't blame you for blowing that scene off. I bitch about bandwidth and then go spend $100 at the club.
And also, you have sharks on your beach. Not in Waikiki...too much tourist piss in the water for those sharks.
