The Meaning of Work in your Life...

Expressed as a percentage of your total waking hours, how much time do you give to spouse, family, friends, etc.?

    I think I'm, sadly, between 0 and 25%.

Hmmm, it saddens me to think but I would have to say over 95% is spent on my work. I don't really live near many friends or family so unfortunately, work is all I do.

Funny thing is, I always heard about that cliche when I was a kid -- the blindly workaholic dad, husband, son, etc -- I never dreamt it would be me.

It shocks me what I can justify to myself in the name of providing.

I, actually, DO NEED my partner to live. She is my savior, my sustenance, the one who keeps even my wildest lobs in play -- making me seeem so much more together than I really am.

Well the world we live in today sets high demands on
everyone who isn't comfortable living on a limited budget
                      each and every month...

Our career-choice is that of the entrepreneur,
thus a LOT of time spent on work is a necessity.

I'm sure it's just the same for those with other CAREERS...
The only way out of being a workaholic is taking
a job at Burger King and try to fill up life with cheap hobbies etc.

I know what would be more depressing for me,
that's why I prefer working like I'm loco

I like freedom and that takes a lot of work these days.

97% of my time is work... Usually go out once or twice a week now with friends and it's usually nothing much, more just getting together for a coffee, out to eat or a movie. 100% of the rest of my time is working, eating, sleeping, or posting on gfy lol

                                        26% - 50% range.

I'm fortunate that I work from home on most days, and get to see my 6 1/2 month old son throughout the day ... and my daughter when she gets home from school.

The reason the the % isn't higher though is because of how late I'm usually up at night (3 - 4am) and how late I wake up (10 - 11am).

I'm getting better over time though, and although it's not nearly as much as I'd like to think - I DO TURN OFF WORK SOMETIMES and focus on the fam.

It's funny, my family is my main motivation to work AND to NOT TO WORK!

                                        Interesting irony.

All work. My 10 year old son comes to my office after school everyday and has his own office too.

Well, it seems most of us are hopeless workaholics.

But, where is this all going? What is the latter-phase happiness we're all working so hard to some day buy for ourselves? Is it simply retirement? Is it the vision of ourselves on some tropical beach, sipping a frozen drink?

What will we have done to our most important relationships by then? What damage?

It's funny, my family is my main motivation to work AND to NOT TO WORK!

                                                  Interesting irony.
                                                  That is a great observation

I usually work from 8AM to around midnight but I try to stay off the comp from 3PM to 9PM to play with my 6 yo son from when he gets outta school until he sleeps, doesn't always happen though

Personally, I have to leave the house to not work as everytime I take a break I always run back to the comp "just real quick to check something" and I get stuck there.

With the whole working at home thing, I am finding I need to practically plan/schedule every minute of my day in order to force myself not to work 24/7 as burnout won't be much good for me or those around me.

You really have to weigh the size of the nest egg you are building versus will there be anyone to spend it with or on if that makes any sense. We all gotta eat but if you let too many years slip by with work as number one, you will be living comfortably with your "family" as a stranger or worse yet totally alone

I think work should be something you love doing and get compensated well for it.

But, where is this all going? What is the latter-phase happiness we're all working so hard to some day buy for ourselves? Is it simply retirement? Is it the vision of ourselves on some tropical beach, sipping a frozen drink?

What will we have done to our most important relationships by then? What damage?

You know, I'm looking to continue my success. I've found my niche, gotten comfortable, then antsy, then comfy, and now I'm getting antsy again. It's time to get a much bigger project going.

As for my most important relationship, I'll be pimping him out in San Diego. He needs to meet n greet as well since he will be graduating in March of next year.

                                                          Nothing.

The question is not whether YOU are happy when you work.

But whether the PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE to whom you owe time, attention and love are happy.

People are workaholics for many reasons. For some it is a need to prove themselves to themselves. Others have a fear of poverty having gone through it at one time in their lives and still others do it as an escape.
