Yeah maxtors suck ass in my opinion. I prefer the Seagate drives with the 5 year warranty. Also Western Digital has done well for me too, they have ones with a 3 year warranty.

Maxtor and IBM Desktar drives have not done good for me at all.

Haha the Hitachi DeathStar. Maxtor has made its way off our Approved Vendor list.

WD is the way to go.

My Maxtor OneTouch died once. I revived it with diskrecovery pro and kept most of the data luckily.

IBM or Seagate are rock solid drives, but to be fair ... I hope you are not using such a large drive as the primary master (MHO).

We use the IBMs in our servers and Seagates in our video boxes ... no issues after a few years of heavy usage.

(Most if not all drive producers are actually using IBM's components to build their drives.)

Some Maxtor drives are okay, but for the most part they belong on the shelf at Cosco.

I had a Maxtor drive take a shit on me in August. It's replacement only lasted LESS THAN A MONTH. Maxtor factory replaced it, but it's still sitting in my desk drawer because I'm affraid to use it.

I read a couple of years ago that IBM drives are now rebadged drives from other manufacturers such as Samsung. From memory there were 3 manufacturers making the same models, so you never really knew where it came from.

                                            Is this still the case?

I've had an IBM deskstar drive go out - I researched it and the best guess is that the head erased/wrote whilst it was seeking over the disk. Big no-no! Kind of like splashing white-out across a typed sheet of paper... most of the data is still there, but as a whole the document is ruined. I was able to low level format the drive and it's working fine now, but I can't trust that drive (or rather its firmware) any more. Who knows when it will next energise the erase heads at the wrong moment.
