And you couldn't just get away with one fingernail either. You need the thumbnail to get the top. The pointer and index for the shallow dig. I'd imagine when we were all apes way back when the finger nails were claws. Through eons of evolution we no longer needed them as much and they mutated to what they are today.

For instance a penis is very similiar to a vagina in everything but shape, they form from a central efficient design, thats why when a woman takes testosterone her clit gets bigger like a little dick.
