I recall 100,000+ people turning out regularly in Tel Aviv for Shalom Achshav (Peace Now) or Yesh Gvul (There's a Limit) demonstrations. I remember hundreds of Israelis going to prison rather than serve their Miluim (compulsory military duty) on the West Bank or in Gaza. I haven't forgotten that around one in five of Israeli citizens are Arabs (there are Arab members of the Knesset/parliament), nor that every morning thousands more Arabs come to work in Israel from the occupied territories.
I do remember that back in the 80's, mainly in poor/Sephardi areas such as Holon, the present Prime Minister was hailed as "King Arik" after he had allowed the massacres in the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps. So yes, there is real hatred for Arabs among some people. But the majority of Israelis were disgusted and ashamed at what Sharon had done, and the Israeli political system rather than any change in public opinion, made his comeback possible.
Most Israelis, although wanting a secure place to live, do not seek a draconian solution nor have any personal animosity towards Arabs. In almost 10 years I met only a handful of Israelis with extreme views. I met many more who had Arab friends, and people who even in such exposed areas as the Golan, had an appreciation of the Arab point of view. My brother-in-law lost a leg in Lebanon. I sat with my head between my knees during an 8-hour Katuysha attack on Kiryat Shemona. An apartment building in the same street was hit by a Scud missile during the first Gulf War. Not once did I hear anyone express personal hatred for Arabs.Comment
