What's better: to promote many programs or only concentrate on a few?

Speaking from a vanilla point of view, work on a few first. It's better to make $100 from 1 site than $10 from 10 sites due to overhead, time required etc.

Also, once you figure out the tricks of the first few it is way easier to cookie cutter many more. This experience will save you a lot of time and money.
