It is because so many people use different resolutions. So it is best to have the site centered so it changes size to fit your resolution. For example, if a site is left aligned and you have your resolution set high, there will be a ton of empty space on the right. Lots of sites were this way before until they caught on.

Your question really stimulated my intellect.... Here's what I came up with after hours of hard thinking....
..its for design purposes... sometimes.. it looks better when its aligned in the center... other times.. it look better aligned on the left.... Alot of sites are aligned on the left...

personally, I prefer to use a margin, to get the text away from the corners of the wind*ows, and then just let it expand freely to the right. Or I use tables that are restricted in size.
