I ran into the same problem when I was thinking of developing phags.com (wondering if it was too demeaning sounding to be a successful gay site.) I haven't yet come up with a solution and decided to put it on the back burner for now. -
I asked my gay friend why he wouldnt go to a site called efags.
I asked if it was because it was demeaning or stupid.
He said "both"

Actually, most gay men "own" the word "fag" now. It does bother some..but not the majority. That's been my experience at least.
