when I was in US after Sept11 and airports were doign luggage searches on all fliers, they repacked mine (you were not allowed to repack your own luggage) and my screen got smashed coming back from Vegas.
when I got home to Oz I priced a screen but it was cheaper to buy a new one
if you knew how to replace the new one yourself...you might be able to buy the part direct off of the manufacturer, push for a discount, they can see the margin in the part in front of them....not possible with all brands i know..but good luck
For around $1200-1300 you should be able to get a new dell with
2.4ghz p4
512mb ddr
dvd/cd-r combo
15" display
and 3 year warranty that covers the laptop (including lcd) no matter what, even if you drop it, except for flood and fire damage. If you spill a drink on it that is convered (not a flood, lol).
This is better than spending $800 on a Viao if its 1 ghz or if its a damn AMD.
With that remote desktop feature in XP, I say fuck laptops. As long as you got a computer nearby, it doesn't matter if its yours or not - Just hop online and log into your own machine. beatiful.
But laptops do have their place so if you're hooked on 'em (and I think this may have been mentioned) just buy a new one. They're not that expensive anymore and it seems like now is as good as any other to look into upgrading in your situation...
