    I started Atkins today.

Kevin (my boss) went on it and lost 20+

I've been doing okay maintaining my weight. But I picked up a 50lb case of cat litter today and just stood there and thought "Oh fuck... this is how much I have to lose. That's just insane."

I plan on dropping some quick pounds and then stick to a healthier style of living. I go for walks but once I drop some MORE weight I will jog more often. Right now it's like running with another guy on your back. My legs cant take it.

Anyways for those of you who I have talked to about this and everyone who has expressed their best wishes over the months thank you.

I was out with some buddies at the bar the other night and just looking around at the scene I started to realize why I am not that social. Just insecure. I know what to do to fix it.

Wish me luck... and if you've ever been on it let's hear some advice!

Btw your insecurity might be why you carry around that extra guy. Just something to consider. Good luck in any case, I need to hit the gym again also, I started regularly right before Phoenix but I've been too damn busy since I got back, let us know how the Atkins thing work out. I am still a slave to junk food..yummy

      My biggest downfall is:

      Coke
      and bread

I eat a lot of bread in a day. Buns, wraps bread etc.
And I drink 2L of coke every day. Not to mention any other shit I can get my hands on. But I RARELY eat chips or chocolate or what have you.

You can pick up atkins bread, its like 6 bucks a loaf here, but if you love bread, it might help.

Still one of the best programs on the net.

What i don't get about the Atkins Diet is that you can eat Bacon, SAUSAGE , Cheese and all these fat products.

I think Atkins was a fraud... he must be related to Martha Stewarts

The new diet I will try in the next few months: I will stay away from fatty shit like bacon and cheese, I'm pulling out my BBQ and will grill all my meals, meats and vegetables are always tasty as hell on the grill, fat drips through, just spike some kabobs and feast away. Stay away from breads and hopefully sweets, I have a terrible sweet tooth.

If you want soda just drink diet sodas... any diet soda will do, look at the nutrition labels... 0 sugars, 0 carbs

A couple of personal trainers I know drink diet sodas all the time, even when dieting down hardcore.

I drink diet mountain dew (regular and code red)... they taste pretty much the same, you get used to the artificial sweetener after a while and don't even notice it.

                          splenda is a wonderful thing

Brad, I've done the Atkins thing and I hated myself. I turned into the biggest bitch imaginable.

The hardest part for me wasn't the bread or sugar, it was knowing that I was restricted form having something. That pissed me off no end. Carb withdrawal is a nightmare.

If you're going to do this, though, let me suggest a soda that you can have that is completely Atkins friendly. Diet Rite has no aspartame, which slows the weight loss for most people. No sugar, no carbs, good flavors. It uses Splenda.

Ross chocolates are great because they don't use the sugar alcohols that make most people run for the bathroom after indulging. They have between .7 and 4 net carbs for a full bar and are available at most Wal-Marts or online at www.lowcarbchocolates.com

Atkins bread is okay, but I certainly wouldn't pay $6/loaf for it. Likewise, the tortillas suck. If you absolutely MUST have your bread, go for something that is WHOLE GRAIN and limit your intake to no more than 2 slices a day (after induction). During induction, stay the hell away from bread, or you won't lose anything and you'll give up.

For some support and help while trying this, check out www.lowcarbfriends.com and chat it up on the message boards. There's also a huge library of recipes and tips and suggestions to use.

                            Good luck.

george foreman grill would work good if you dont want to fire up the bbq or if its cold/raining outside

95% lean ground beef, turkey, top sirloin steaks (even a new york or filet mignon *occasionally*), flank steaks, fish, and chicken breast of course are all good

Brad, the Atkins diet isnt good at all for your body.

You should really talk to your doctor before doing it...

Carbs aren't necessarily bad for you... just make sure you eat the right carbs if you're eating carbs and don't over do it.

white rice, white bread, potatos, etc = nono

brown rice, whole wheat bread, sweet potatos = good, fibrous carbs

eat less carbs toward the end of the day, and especially before bed

Fatkins Diet where you lose water weight and muscle while keeping all the fat!

If you want to take the low carb wrote try CKD (http://www.c-k-d.com/) or Ultimate Diet 2.0 (http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/pro...s/ud_intro.php).

You have to remember though Brad, the day you get off Atkins, you'll become fat again. Think about changing your lifestyle, not a short-fix diet or the weight will return.

BradM --- You might also combine KRL's cinnamuck tea with your efforts. I know someone who has lost about 20lbs so far changing the diet and drinking the tea.

Also, the tea (the cinnamon anyway) does seem to help regulate your blood sugar as well... she tested hers for about 2 weeks with a diabetic monitor.

                                          Even the NIH admits similar:

                                          http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract

One who understands how diabetes and insulin work could see how such a thing might help you lose and regulate your weight as well.

If you don't like the consistency of the tea, just hit a teaspoon of honey and cinnamon 2x a day followed with a big glass of water (then brush your teeth cause honey is rough on them I think)

I'm not PRO-ATKINS or ANTI-ATIKINS... I kow a few people that have done very well with it... but I know of one guy who was really overweight for probably 20 years..(used to lift a lot of weights, then stopped and got fat).

Anyway, I was back in the old neighborhood a few months ago and saw that this guy had lost a lot of weight.... he told me he had been on Atkins & blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc etc are all in check and doctor is very impressed..... then a couple months later he had a heart attack (survived).

It may or may not be significant or related to the diet... his heart attack could have been from any number of things. But the bottom line was, all his heart-disease / heart-attack causing numbers were low/ered.... and then BAM -- he has one.

                                              BradM,

I've been on something similar to Atkins. Lasted 3 weeks, lost quite some bit in that short time, but I did not like it much.

Also, Atkins is dangerous, if done wrong it will just not work.

A few facts you need to know about your body & Atkins:

                                              1) Atkins is based on the fact that the body normally burns carbs first and then fat and turns extra carbs into fat for storage. If you take away carbs, it _needs_ to burn fat.

                                              2) To get your body to EFFECTIVELY burn fat instead of carbs, you need to lower your carbs to virtually 0. Atkins says its something like 20g, even if thats true, its dangerous since if you step over it by 2g you are fucked. So the only real way is to not eat ANY carbs at all.

                                              3) Your body takes around 24 hours of low/no carbs to switch from carb burning to fat burning. Your body takes almost no time of too much carbs to switch from fat burning back to carb burning.

                                              4) Your body still needs the same amount of caleries a day in food. Around 3000-3500 cals I think for a grown male. To effectively burn your STORAGE FAT you thus need to eat around 3000 cals a day (with as little or none coming from carbs) _AND_ workout to burn around 1000 or so cals to effectively burn your storage fat. (You need 3000, eat 3000 but burn 1000, difference to normally is that you do not burn carbs but you burn fat, thus your body burns the fat you eat and the fat you have stored)

                                              5) Your body is setup in a way to think that _FAT_ is _MORE IMPORTANT_ than MUSCLES! So, if you eat TOO LITTLE and work out. For example eat only 2000 and workout for 500 or 1000, your cals get so low that your body goes into protection-mode and starts to burn your MUSCLES instead!

                                              6) Atkins came from a diet made for body-builders, or generally people that work out and build muscle mass. They eat 0 carbs during the week, and eat normal during hte weekend since muscles need carbs. They also often eat carb-spikes at the end of a workout. Low spikes but spikes that get immediately turned into muscle tissue. This kind of diet is the ONLY way to burn the last fat (like last 5% or so) in your body, and thats why they use it!

                                              7) You _SMELL_ When you are on no/low-carb diets

                                              Conclusion:
If you achive low enough carbs and start burning fat the next day, then make a mistake you easily get back into carb burning. What happends? _ALL_ the excess fat you had to eat for your daily cals gets _STORED_ instead of burned, since the body takes so long to switch to fat burning. Its a shitty diet to be on, have to be careful and know what you are doing. It does work sometimes, it does not other times. Also, you will be AMAZED what has carbs ;)

Also, one thing to always remember brad. The way you eat now is not unhealthy because you eat _BREAD_. It is unhealthy because of what is ON the bread most of the time! Bread was never unhealthy. Its a very good thing to eat. Carbs are not bad! What is _BAD_ is eating Carbs & Fat together.

Don't let the haterz get to you, BradM, Atkins really works. Just stick to it and the pounds will melt away.

Atkins is the diet of the desperate and just by cutting out the coke you will drop weight fast with a little exercise.

Balanced healthy diet together with exercise is the only real way and just remember that Atkins was even clinically obese himself.

                                                      Here's my

A quick-fix diet won't last, the minute you get off you will most likely gain everything back and in some cases more depending on the way you were treating your body during your diet.

Seriously consider a lifestyle change, if you're willing to put in 8 weeks to give something like the Atkins diet a chance, you might want to put 48 hours before that into some research on proper nutrition.

Then diet and excersize correctly, you'll gain much better results and feel a lot better about yourself if you actually know what you should expect rather than crossing your fingers hoping you lose 20lbs like your buddy did on some over hyped diet.

Don't try to be rambo on the diet either, you'll burn yourself out and hate it in about 2 weeks. Give yourself a free day, like Sunday or Friday where you can eat what you want. It will help keep you sane!

After that, bodyfat maintenance is just common sense. It's real easy to control your diet once you know more about the foods you should and shouldn't eat (this was the hardest thing for me at first, in the very beginning I got tired of chicken breast real fast!).

Not bashing you or anything, but a quick-fix diet like this won't last... it will be the most dissapointing tease you will do to yourself.

Remember who number 1 is... don't use the common excuse that you're too busy to squeeze in a couple hours a week (5% of what you put into 'work') of cardio and/or weight training... If some of these people stepped back and took a look at what they were too busy for, they'd realize it was themselves.

Take care of yourself because you only have one you!

But its going to help me knock off the weight I need to drop.
Don't think about it in pounds. Think about it in fat.

You don't want to lose more than a pound of fat a week or you will risk losing muscle as well.

A lot of those people who lost insane amounts of weights with dieting (like the ones you see on TV) still look like crap if they took off their clothes. The reason being is the majority of the weight they lost was from muscle.

Good luck with it - we've been on Atkins for quite a while now and dropped a lot of weight between us. The first 3 days are the hardest, before you start make up plenty of snacks ready for when you get the munchies (strips of chicken breast baked in butter and garlic, egg mayo, slices of ham spread with cream cheese and rolled up etc) and drink at least 2 litres of water a day, remember that on this plan when you're hungry - EAT, it takes a while to get your head around both that and the fact that fat is GOOD. Also make sure that for the first 2 weeks of Induction you eat your full 20 carbs of veggies every day (my lifesavers are mushrooms, cauliflower and broccoli - if you get bored with them add some cream, cheese and pepper).

Stick with it through the first few hard days and let us know how much you've lost at the end of the first 2 weeks

So the only real way is to not eat ANY carbs at all.

this differs with every person, some ppl reach this point at under 100 grams and some have to eat none at all to reach this point.

(You need 3000, eat 3000 but burn 1000, difference to normally is that you do not burn carbs but you burn fat, thus your body burns the fat you eat and the fat you have stored)

the calories depend too... always use this formula... 12 cals per pound bodyweight... solid rule. You have to substitute your carbs in this diet with EFA (Essential Fatty Acids) mostly found in fish etc.

                                                                    7) You _SMELL_ When you are on no/low-carb diets

this is becoz the ketogenesis you reach is a toxic phase, the name says it all... it's not good for your body at all. You will lose weight no doubt but you will also harm your body during it!

Basically atkins for the first 2 weeks, but then you can start adding a few of the "good carbs" back in after that. I lost almost 20 lbs in the first month. It's been 3 months now and it's going great. I really don't feel like I'm losing out on anything like I did on Atkins.

The first 2 weeks suck, you rally start to crave carbs especially the first 3 days. I guess it's the body cleaning everything out. After that it's smooth sailing.
