April 15, 2004 -- HOWARD Stern has discovered the Internet in a big way.
The radio star's rarely used website has suddenly exploded with activity and activism ever since he was fined, fired and fined again.
From a sleepy, haphazardly updated website, HowardStern.com has, in little more than a month, been turned into a potent weapon for attacking enemies and a vehicle for saying things he can't on his top-rated radio show.
And it is working. The site had 8 million visitors in just two days last week, huge traffic for the Internet.
"I think he intends to use it as a Paul Revere kind of Minuteman, get-the-message-out service," says Inside Radio editor Tom Taylor.
"Except that in this case, it's not 'The British are coming,' it's the FCC."
Stern's newly-aggressive website has several "call to arms" sections that sprang up after his most recent FCC fines - including one last week for a whopping $495,000 - and his subsequent firing from six Clear Channel stations.... (continued)
