I Had My First Anxiety Attack Last Night!

It was without doubt one of the most horrifying things I have ever experienced! My friends and family were amazed that I actually was able to drive myself to the emergency room! I honestly thought I had my time card and was ready to punch out of life.

The morning while driving to work I knew something wasn't right. It felt like someone was reaching into my chest and squeezing my heart causing it to skip beats. Then later on that evening I was watching the Apprentice and I just lost it. I honestly thought I was having a heart attack. It was horrible!

The doctor told me that I had an anxiety attack and it could have been caused by multiple things. He prescribed me 50mg Vistaril and it helps a little but I now I live in fear of it happening again.

Anyone else here have anxiety problems? How do you cope with it? I don't want to start taking Xanax because it turns me into a zombie so I want to beat it without meds. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, it's TERRIBLE!

I haven't done acid since college. My screenname is from my company (acidflyers.com) so it was a play on words. I'm High on Acid not in the sense of drug use.

I quit smoking pot and that seems to help a little. The doc told me that pot and alcohol don't contribute to anxiety but it can be a catilyst for an attack since they make you more in tune with your body and paranoid.

I have that shit way too often...after your first time your fucked. What the guy above me said, just thinking of it will cause panic attacks.

The only way to deal with it is knowing and saying to yourself its in your brain. Youre not gonna die, youre not gonna have a heart attack, you just think you will. Try to ignore it, go do something like a game. Call someone, anything to get your mind off it.

The reason i know its most likely just in your brain is because a few times when i had that shit someone called me or the doorbell rang and 10 mins later i realized that i totally "forgot" about my panic attack. So you can turn it off, its not easy tho.

                Hard to beat without meds.
Just take a lower dose of xanax.

Sorry man, that sucks. For anxiety I am definitely a believer in better living through chemistry. If you don't like how you feel on Xanax, talk with your doctor and see if there's something that works better for you. Personally I can't take valium. It actually makes me MORE anxious. I bet there is something that will work for you that won't make you feel "drugged". Good luck.

I think what you need the most is to vary your life style. No more sitting behind that radioactive monitor till 3am. Go outside enjoy the day, get a feeling for who you are, you've probably not contemplated in the past 3 years, but do this during the day when its nice and shiny outside. Smell the air, feel yourself get accustomed to who you are now a days and feel comfortable with yourself.

Once you can accept yourself the anxiety should pass, stay off the meds and drugs for shure!

I agree but it's hard as hell to quit thinking about it. I try to get myself wrapped up in design or other things but I'll feel my heart palpitate and all of a sudden I find myself thinking about it. My vision also gets hazy (almost like a bad headrush) and that also sparks it.

I think meds are going to be the only way to go until I can just all out forget about it.

Look at Tony Soprano, and he is on Prozac, so the Doc must think this is isolated or you would be referred for therapy and much stronger drugs.....

I haven't been high since I got arrested last year. When I went to court yesterday I was expecting to go right on probation. My mom was offering me her meds in case I got nervous. I'm like mom I'm going to court and facing jail time for drugs... and you're offering me... DRUGS? STOP!

I rarely share this, but I have had panic attacks for the last 2 years.....it is bound to be one of the worst things and is horrifying to experience. People that have never had one do not understand it at all. The physical symptoms are very real. I had the heart racing, dizziness and nausea..etc.etc.

After 3 emergency room trips where I just thought I was gonna die...they finally told me what it was.
I've been on medication for about a year now and haven't had another one, but I SWEAR it is still a daily fear that I'm going to have another whenever I go out.

Would be nice if someone could just hyponotize me and wipe them out of my memory so I didn't remember them ! LOL

Anyways....I feel for you. See a doctor before it gets worse...and let me tell you they do get worse, and more frequent, which is why so many suffer from the "fear of" for letting it go on to long.

I had an anxiety attack in the hospital last weekend while being treated for an infection after surgery.

It sucked, my pulse got upto 125bpm and my teeth went numb.

The weed usually keeps my anxiety away...

Zagi, I think you hit the nail on the head. Ever since my break up 8 months ago, I've done nothing but bury myself in my work and my social life is nill. I used to go to the gym and had a pretty nice build but since then it's gone to shit and I have somewhat of a gut. I find myself sucking it in and concentrating on it when I'm around people - so I'm not happy with the way I look right now.

I'm going to try to get out more and approach life in a different way.

I get panic attacks often. It took me a while to realize what was going on and what to do about it. I am on Effexor for depression/anxiety and I think it helps a lot. Of course there are still the occasional attacks and depressed periods.. but deffinetly better than I was.

All other meds that I have tried for this put me in a bubble and never let me feel anything. Which I absolutly hated. With the Effexor I still have emotions and still have feelings.

The best thing is to talk to a doctor about it and let them know that you dont want to be on any medications that will numb your emotions or that you could become addicted to. Talking to someone is the best thing you can do.

Good luck dude. Sorry it happened. But its stuff we all have to deal with.. you'll be fine.

The Craziest part about this is that I know I should get out more and do other things but I find myself making excuses to not go out. My friends make plans all the time and I agree to go out with them but when it's time to go out, I make up excuses or just ignore my phone when they call. One of my best friend's bachelor party was last weekend and I told him I couldn't make it because I had to work (I really stayed at home and watched tv).

I've seen commercials for Social Anxiety Disorder (which I think I have) but I can't remember what the medication was called.

Also, I have this gut feeling like something bad is going to happen. Like when I'm driving sometimes I feel like I'm going to get into an accident and die or some other doom is lurking around the corner. It's HORRIBLE!!!

if you quit pot - it mioght be something toi do with withdrawel symptoms

in any case - keep a paperbag handy
next time you have an attack - lay down flat and breath in and out of a paperbag

It's Paxil. I have a friend who takes it, and it's changed the quality of his life in a big way. Ask your doctor about it!

I think that is what I'm going to do. A pet will force me out of the house and that's exactly what I need to do, get out more.

One step at a time and I'm sure I'll get over it.

Great idea, getting a dog! At various rough times in my life my dogs have been the reason I got out of bed in the morning, and the reason I came home every day when I was a bit too much of a partier. Also the one constant through a bad marriage and other rough spots. Truly unconditional love. Go for it!

I suffered from panic attacks my junior and senoir years in high school. I became agoraphobic and I let it take over my life. Being afraid of the next attack inevitably brought on more in a vicious cycle. I really dont like to take pills, so I never took drugs for the disorder. I found that three things helped me. Going for long walks with my dog, counting slowly backwards from 100, and inhaling cool air (from the freezer in the summertime).

Stimlulants such as caffeine tended to make me much worse, so I avoided coffee, coke, and all other caffinated substances. I also quit smoking pot and all other drugs becuase they make me very paranoid as well.

When I started college, I decided I had had enough and if I felt an attack I would just ignore it completely. I havent had an attack in years. So there is hope that it will just go away. Good luck.

Go outside enjoy the day, get a feeling for who you are, you've probably not contemplated in the past 3 years, but do this during the day when its nice and shiny outside. Smell the air, feel yourself get accustomed to who you are now a days and feel comfortable with yourself.

Once you can accept yourself the anxiety should pass, stay off the meds and drugs for shure!
excellent advice. Been getting attacks since 2 years back.. Took meds for 14 days. Cut down on my PC hours ALOT, went biking alot... Problem (almost) solved. I only get mild attacks now (like heavy feeling on your chest).

A friend of mine that swore by it and thought it helped her a lot.. tried to commit suicide by taking a bottle of it and downing it with liquor. She had an opposite reaction from taking it for a period of time and went crazy. You really need to watch what you are taking and really do some research if you do suggest to go the medical way.

But if you can beat this by taking baby steps.. then I say go for it. I tried, but I could never overcome certain things. I wouldnt leave the house to even visit a friend. I slept all the time, or watched tv and stayed up all night long thinking out how I would have rather gone out than stayed home. The meds I am on now was just enough to push me to get out and do things, and by doing this I feel much better about myself and feel that I am really overcoming something with the help of a pill I take once a day.. like a vitamin.

I tried to do it without meds.. realized I couldnt.. so I went back to being on them. And I can say that it was deffinetly the best choice for me.

Plenty of people get relief from Valium which seems to have the opposite effect on me that it should. I am sure that some people like you and your friend shouldn't take Paxil. But it definitely works for some people.

Definitely varies from person to person, I wouldn't say "this drug is no good for anyone..." unless we're talking about crank lol.

The usual amount I would take for anxiety is .25 mg - taking a whole 1 mg would put me to sleep too! The .25 is a much more realistic dose if you plan on being able to function. I am guessing your doctor would put you on .25's to start. You should ask about this too, don't go by the results you got from taking 4x the dose you would be prescribed!
