However after ten years of sanctions, inspections, game-playing, run-arounds, rhetoric, etc. Iraq had become a pariah. This contributed to the instability in the Middle East.

                                                                                                                    Unfortunately, a significant portion of the energy needs of the US
                                                                                                                    come from the Middle East. Instability could threaten that supply of engery, which in turn would ripple out to affect the economy and jobs.

                                                                                                                    That threat of instablity, particularly since the first gulf war, has kept a sizable US military presence in the region. The removal of that military presence (particularly from Saudi Arabia) is one of Osama bin Laden's stated goals. Hence Iraq's connection to terrorism.
