ZoneAlarm, the free edition software firewall is great. It locks down your connection so that even if an app gets installed on your system somehow, it will have to ask permision to dial out. (ZoneLabs.com)
I also have a hardware firewall in my router, and use Ad-Aware and Spybot weekly too.
