    New breed of webmasters

    I call them mastersurfers not webmasters.

    The new breed doesn't care if a site converts and makes them money.

    the new breed cares if the site looks kewl and doesn't care if it converts.


    Do you consider yourself a mastersurfer or webmaster?

                          IMO, the reason for this is in the new age of the Internet, there are so many tools that automate otherwise mundane processes.

                          As a result, laziness kicks in.

                                          I think a site looking nice may add a bit of trust between the webmaster and the program just due to the fact that if it looks nice, it conveys a sense that the program owner cared enough to pay for a nice design, so in a webmasters head, that must mean that the program makes money and that the owner doesn't mind spending it. I think content is the main key in conversions anyway. My top converter doesn't look as good as some others but it offers a very unique set of content that subscribes to a very specific genre. It's converted @ no more than 1:60 in the last 8 months for me and I am doing nothing special. Submitting to TGPs and running a couple banners is all. Whereas I have promoted some of the flashier places in the same way for the same amount of time and haven't got a single sale to this day from them.

                                                              this is exactly what I mean. we have it All but our best converting site looks like shit I really don't get it.

                                                                  I do agree that the "mastersurfers" only look for the "latest & greatest" things to push, even if the latest and greatest aint shit. They really dont have any idea on what will convert or how to convert it when they start promoting it. The "mastersurfers" main concern is to make their site look pretty then trash the program when the "new, hottest thing to hit the industry" dosent convert for them. In nearly every case its their own fault, but try telling them that. Remember, they are 18 years old, they know everything. hehe

                                                                  These mastersurfers can be turned into real webmasters, but most build sites, blow through traffic and BW then bitch when they arnt making any money.


                                                                  Not slamming the new guys at all. They have to start somewhere. I just wish they would ask questions and try to learn before they embark on a new business. They would find that many of us program owners very willing to help. Its in our best interest to seek out the serious mastersurfers and help them achive there dream of becoming webmasters.

                                                                              you got to impress the webmaster first these days before you impress the surfer.A lot of the shitty looking sites don't convert well on tgp traffic, they might do great on SE and mailers but not great on tgp traffic for me at least.

                                                                                                          If I had more time I could explain since I've been looking at numbers for many years now.

I hate to have to say that, but it's true. Only one site did I ever make that converted well AND looked good. I changed it many times over the years, and came to the conclusion that it was the unique content that was converting, and the easy layout rather than the slick graphics.

                                                                                                                              I remember once when I was in the Army, a Staff Sergeant told me he didn't like Playboy because the crotches were shaded in. He like Penthouse. Most people agreed with him.

                                                                                                                              Now that was when you had to actually go out an buy a magazine that was costly to produce to get your porn.

                                                                                                                              Now we have dark rooms at night with drunk customers who didn't get any and want a cheap, easy thrill.

                                                                                                                              It makes perfect sense. I think that as time goes on we'll see more stratification in the market, you'll have your connosieurs who want vanity sites with slick production, and you'll have your bottom feeders and everything in between.

                                                                                                                              Bottom line? Make it easy to surf, make it very clear that they'll get to see pussy and whatever else it is you're selling them, and you're in. We run a mass peep-show. Only we don't have to hire people to mop out the booths with disinfectant.
