In this age of 24/7 live nude cams and a million other ways to see REAL naked people whenever you want, it DOES seem like cartoons are a strange way to get your masturbatory jollies.
Remember, however, that the first pornography, which pre-dated photography by millennia, was ALL illustration and pictorial representation. Remember, also, how many of us got our first glimpses of nude bodies, not from packaged erotica, but from medical and other kinds of illustrated material never created for its tittilation value.
Today's erotic 'toons, as I see it, continue to garner marketshare for two reasons: 1- Because our interest in sexual IMAGERY transcends the boundaries of photorealism and verisimilitude, and 2- Because cartoons can be made to do things that living models can't or won't.
