TURKEY: PRO or CON E.U entrance (a little on the contraversial side)

    Hi everyone,

I've been keeping up with the latest news events and have stumbled across this one: Turkey has just been granted the opportunity to begin membership talks with the E.U in Ankara on October 3, but linked the offer to effective Turkish recognition of Cyprus, which joined the EU in May. I am from Cyprus myself and I do not believe that Turkey should join the EU due to personal biases:

In July 20, 1974, Turkey launched a full scale invasion on Cyprus. The excuse was to protect its 18% Turkish minority of the island following a coup d' etat, though the goal was one of ethnic cleansing. As a result, 200,000 Greek Cypriots who fled to the south part of the island turned into refugees in their own country. This number corresponds to a close 40% of the entire Greek Cypriot population.

31 years after the invasion, Turkey continues to occupy 37% of the northern part of the island which has declared an independent state that is only recognized by her government. The "declaration of independence", and the forming of the so called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" have been internationally condemned.

So the question is, knowing that the E.U has a full fledged set of "rules" or "standard" if you will to enter the Union, including humanitarian standards, should Turkey be allowed to enter the E.U.

And to add a little contraversey, should a predominately Muslim country be allowed to join what is called a "Christian Club."

    Thoughts on this please :-)

1.What's religion got to do with the EU

    2. If they didn't let in countries who had invaded and ocupied then the EU would consist of Switzerland and Andora.

    3. Why should it matter to you as your in Canada

          CON

they should get their human rights organized first then we'll talk.

Turkey is a long way from being an EU member IMO.

            multiple thread heh

Hi Mona, I'm Greek and my business partner is from Cyprus like yourself. His family was forced to leave that tragic day and they never managed to go back to see their homes at the occupied land till last summer.

The question is more complicated than it seems to some....briefly I'll tell you that I prefer to see Turkey in the EU mostly for political and diplomatic reasons.

ps. send me a message on icq na peis ena geia :-)

They should be let in, but only IF they fix all those human right and women's right issues 100.00 % ... which they won't be able to do in less than 15-20 years minimum, if ever

Just changing the laws won't cut it because those laws aren't being followed through anywhere outside of Istanbul and Ankara.
There needs to be a new generation of executives (judges, policemen, politicians) and a new generation of Turks overall, that lived with AND wholeheartedly accepted the new laws

There should be economical and geo-strategical gains for the EU in the long term with Turkey as a member, but these gains are ONLY worth it they don't allow Turkey to import ANY PART of that whole archaic, anachronistic, barbaric, not working islamic society model into the EU

Letting in Turkey is like letting Zimbabwe as the 51st State in the US
Completly different culture and values, and that has nothing to do with religion as Islam is already the 2nd religion in Europe

Turkey should first abandon northern Cyprus, and let the Turkish Cypriots (persuade them to) unite. But anyway, TR still has many social and economic problems and discrepancies, that will take a lot of years to actually allow Turks to fully join EU. Plus the religion difference, fear of migrants, Kurdish minority rights issue ...

I think most Turks live in a 1 mile radius of me anyway.... and Im in North London!

Lots of Human rights issues to be sorted out before they can even be concidered.

I have a lot of Turkish friends, they are a stubborn lot and I cant see them backing down on Cyprus. Even the 2nd generation british/turks that I know will get irrate at the suggestion.

EU is not a Christian club, but a European club, and Kurds Syrians, Anatolians have nothing to do with European History.........

if they take Turkey, why not Israel? Israel was created by Europeans, so its even more closely linked to Europe than Ottoman barbarians who tried to invade Europe and transform them in slaves and vassals.

we all know what a Muslim democracy is... Turks wanted a few months ago to lynch women who betrayed their husband. and what about Armenian Genocide (1.5 million large scale extermination)......

European politicians dont follow the ppl , they will pay soon for all their mistakes.

America can fear China, but its been a long time since Europe is the old declining continent....
