    Hawaii waves could hit 5-0 (pics)

    Strong winds in the north-west Pacific Ocean sent towering waves crashing along Hawaii?s coast, prompting officials to close beaches amid fears that some waves could reach as high as 50 feet.

    The National Weather Service put high surf warnings in effect for the north-facing shores of all the islands except Lanai until later today.

      Surfers Expected to Brave Major Waves in Hawaii




      December 15, 2004 ยท Surfers in Hawaii are expected at the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational on Oahu, which is only held when waves reach at least 20 feet. But this year, waves could crest as high as 50 feet, and the National Weather Service is advising people to stay away.

                              Long beach, Vancouver Island is about as wild as it gets here in Canada and our little bumps don't even compare to those pics.

                                                      That is the closest I have ever come to drowning. Come back up to the surface to see you are right in the break zone in the middle of a set and only have a split second to grab a small breath and go under again and try to swim like fuck to get out past the break.

                                                      The secret is not to panic though.. if you do forget it.

                                                      I rescued a guy in Hawaii... he was in four feet of water and had been knocked over 3 times and was so panicked he didn't even think to try to stand up.

South shore is happening in Summer when the North shore is flat but nowhere near as big. 5ft max usually which is just fine for me to go to Ala Moana, Makapu'u or even play dodgem with the Japanese tourists at Waikiki.
