    Guard Dog. Protection ??

    I am looking to get a dog to protect and guard my house. I am not sure what to get a Rott or a Neoploitan or English Mastiff.

    I definetly do not want a doberman.

    Anyone have a suggestion, on what would be a good choice?

                                          ....dogs & guns are wonderful security, but as with anything potentially dangerous treat them with respect...don't be a crack head KNEEGROW and treat any animal with disrespect

                                              I thought about them, but in FL it's hot, but you are in FL too so I guess they can handle it?

                                              Where'd you go to get them. A fully trained dog would be ideal, but what about bringing a adult shepard into a home with children?

                                                                  As for the Mastiff's they are great dogs, and massive. Unbelivably calm too, off course unless they need to get mean. Then look out!

                                                                                      I live in the tropics and I have a REAL reason to have a guard dog!

                                                                                      Mine is a German sheperd and I trained her myself there is a lot of info on the net about how to do this.

                                                                                      She WILL ATTACK on command and RELAX on command. She also applies instinct and that is priceless!

                                                                                              yes, I have a sub-5 year old child...my female and male rottie who were both raised as a part of my pack/family several years prior to my kids arrival were/are GREAT with him...

                                                                                              as a side note I never allowed my puppies to "play bite" as I knew when they grew up that would not be 'ok' to play around with...



                                                                                              their instincts on how to protect were/are amazing and required no shutzhund training although if you require a very high level of security it's a sound and entertaining option... I've known other Rott owners to have a great time with their dogs during this training...





                                                                                              PS: I've also spent quite a bit of time around German Shepards and they're also inately skilled with family and security environments...






                                                                                              PPS: the only Mastiff I've gotten to know pretty well was a year old puppy that was 170lbs and amazingly calm around large numbers of kids and people... He was also known to have tossed a few aggressive dogs that challenged him while protecting his owner (old blind guy)...also without any specialized training...

                                                                                                                                                  I have two good friends who are professional trainers. Dogs have different drives including, but not limited to, Prey, Defense and finally evasion.

                                                                                                                                                  The fact of the matter, and believe me it's a fact, you can not train just any dog to be a good defender. They either are or they're not, even before they're trained. Read up on it sometime.

                                                                                                                                                          Some breeds, like German Sheppards, Rottweilers and Dobermen will by their nature be better defenders. Buying a dog in those breed lines is not enough though.

                                                                                                                                                          Like some have said, including myself, get a dog from a reputable breeder. It's a genetic thing and it can't be taught if it doesn't exist at all in a dog.

                                                                                                                                                              I don't know what dog he had back then but anyways ...

                                                                                                                                                              He told his friend to meet him at his house later this day ... but he went to the corner store .

                                                                                                                                                              So his friend got in the house . The dog didn't do nothing . He just followed him arround ...

                                                                                                                                                              when he was gonna leave, the dog started pulling him in a corner ... and he had to wait there untill they came back lol
