I think you just answered your own question, because most people hate telemarketers as much as (or even more than) spammers.
Some people do go a little psycho over spam, but on the other hand if you get 25 spams for every legitimate email (like I do) it can get pretty annoying. And unfortunately no spam filter is anywhere near perfect.

P.S. I use "InBoxer" to filter spam. It is incredibly accurate, but only works with MS Outlook.
