the movie industry is based on ROI. producers will create what they can turn a profit on, they have no other agenda.
and, you can make "statistics" say anything you want.
the simple fact is that films without sexual content SHOULD gross more---they are unrestricted---more people can see Bambi than Deep Throat, and bigger audiences will generate bigger grosses.
and mainstream films usually COST MUCH MORE to produce than low-budget erotic fare, so though erotica produces less gross revenue the % NET NET on erotica can be greater than mainstream films.

From the sounds of it, the study was run with the purpose of proving sex wouldn't sell. That's not how you do studies. Not to mention the American market has been living in fear, heavily unemployed, and constantly bombarded with negative, fear-inducing messages on television (usually for profit).
