Google Mail - 1 gb or BS?

April Fools or two fingers to Competition?

Google made a press release saying they are going to offer email services in competition with Yahoo etc.

    Including:
1 gig of space (250 times more space in Yahoo)
Searchable Database - rather than filing system
    Contextual Ads (ad words)

    Now...
The press release looks like a piss take alright but if real this could be a stroke of genius....
    Press Release

They say they will filter all mail based on content and allow you to 'search' your mail on themes base rather than having folder.
If they do that - they will be able to deliver sooo many Targeted Ads to users' browsers.

"Gmail makes using email faster and more efficient by eliminating the need to file messages into folders, and by automatically organizing individual emails into meaningful "conversations" that show messages in the context of all the replies sent in response to them. And it turns annoying spam e-mail messages into the equivalent of canned meat."

    What do you think?

the amount of people that will use anything close to this amount of space is minimal, thus google gains publicity at minimal cost.

I guess the space isnt such a great issue - especially not ove time

I still cant work out whether its an April fool yet

The ad system will increase ad exposure a massive amount
I think about about 20%+ MSN traffic is hotmail.msn.com

                        B) why wud they go to the trouble of doing all that content?

sounds good, wonder if u can pop to it?

                          true true

I guess its an exposure thing - they are being very aloof about dishing the info on the service

                          Im almost sure its true
                          But
                          A) GoogleGuy at WMW has been saying nothing
                          b) they havnt run this through the Labs as most new services would be
                          however
Saying nothing will be a PR stunt
They will release it im sure
Assides branding, which i think is dodgy, they will do V well.
                          and i want a decent addy ;)

i think that it will turn out to be a joke or at least the amount of space they give.

                                    nope and nope.

It is great pr for them, and they freely admit they will be scanning the mail topics so they know what you are into so they can spam you with info they think you will want to hear

I wonder if they will filter out adult topics

There might be a max attachment size, so even at 1gb, the max attachment might only be 1-2mb...just a guess
