Did you know this about Hemi engines?

They fucked up the badboy Hemi image when they threw one into a fucking station wagon! What in the fuck were they thinking!?!?

I'd assume the piston still moves, there's just no injection or explosion for that cylinder, it's "dragged" along.

the pistons would have to move , they are connected to the crankshaft so there is no way to stop 4 pistons

all that would happen is no explosion happens in the cylinder , the firing order would probaly be 1,3,5,7 , spread the load out over the block so that it doesn't get quite as hot

I have a couple friends with the hemi set up, they love it, power when you want it and good mileage, not found anywhere else like that.
My brother has a cummins in his truck, all the fixins, it hauls ass! 0-100mph on a on-ramp in a 1-ton 4x4 4 door pickup!!!

Yeah I remember those, it was the 8-6-4 thing, it sucked, the hemi got it right, the biggest problem with the caddy version was lubrication, Dodge figured out how to overcome that, the damn thing works pretty good

gm has that system also . . my caddy sts uses that . . they call it 'vvs' or 'vvt' something like that

I like the look of it, not much for interior comfort though

you actually dont shut down the 4 cyliders, they do so themselves and as far as i understand you have no control over it. If you are just cruising at low speeds, the car will use 4 cylinders, once you gun it or give it enough gas, the other 4 kick in.

I remember this being on the ZR1 corvette back around 1990. It had what they called a "valet key" you could remove that would cripple four of the eight cyclinders

Actually they use a rotating firering order to do this! Its not really new Chrysler messed with it several times in the past!

It's called MDS "Multi Displacement System" they actually do talk about it on the commercials... most people don't know what MDS is though... it's on the new commercials with Dr. Z

How the Multi-Displacement System Works

The idea was to design a system where the onboard engine computer could deactivate four cylinders simultaneously. This is especially helpful when the vehicle is in cruise mode running down the freeway at 65 mph where the road load horsepower requirement is probably less than 20 hp. In this situation, it doesn't make much sense to have all eight cylinders pumping away when four could easily to the job. Eliminate the pumping requirements of four cylinders, and you're guaranteed to improve fuel economy. That's why DaimlerChrysler designed the Multi-Displacement System (MDS).

The system was designed around what is called a "lost motion device." DaimlerChrysler engineers designed the Hemi with a separate oil circuit controlled by four solenoids that apply oil pressure to eight specially configured hydraulic roller lifters. When the computer decides to deactivate the cylinders, the solenoids are electronically engaged and oil pressure is sent to the lifters via a separate oil passage in the block that pushes on a small pin that allows the internal piston in the hydraulic lifter to disengage from the lifter. The lifter body still rises and falls with the cam lobe, but the piston that is linked to the pushrod remains stationary. DaimlerChrysler engineers state that the system can deactivate four cylinders within 40 milliseconds (0.040 second). Both the intake and exhaust lifters for each cylinder are deactivated. Every other cylinder is deactivated so the transition from eight to four and four to eight cylinders is seamless. We've driven both the new Dodge Magnum and the Chrysler 300-C, and it is impossible to tell when the engine is running on four cylinders and when it doubles back to eight.

It so nice to have 5.7 litres of power when needed but still save some $ at the gaspump. The other car companies are currently working on their own verisions of this not so new technology.

Ha, so the pistons do stop moving, I was right... sounds like a bad idea to me. I see a recall in the near future.
