If they never let you drive alone it might have more to do with your look then the rules. I live in the US and I don't get a babysitter when I test drive a car.

I believe you. Don't get me wrong I like the BMWs very nice classy cars, but they are far from fastest car on the road. You probably ran up against an older 3 series or something. Not to hard to fathom. Its not like you said you blew away a ferrari or something.

As far as the sales person traveling with you. That all would depend on the dealer and your credentials in the US. I have never had a sales person come with me. I have test driven many cars out to dinner, overnite, for 2 days.. with no sales person. From vettes to SUVs. Find a new dealer to shop at if you can't judge the car without someone breathing down your neck.

um.. so a meaty 6 cylinder beat out probably a 2-3 litre 4 cylinder or maybe 6 3 series... No offence but just because theres a BMW badge on it doesn't mean it's got pace.. you were probably comparing apples to oranges, just like comparing a 540 with a mondeo. BMW is a range of cars. I think most people here have cars that could beat a low range beemer..

yep even an older low end 6 cylinder 5 series like a 523 or 525. But odds are it was an older 3 like a 318 or something that people like to ice up.. sounds like it with his acceleration.
I think the point of the story was that the kid thought he could take the car on and lost. Although i think it was stupid to be provoking people into shit by coming up to the alongside and revving your engine. He probably took off just to get away from the crazy guy stalking him and revving him on the freeway and then let sensai cruise past and out of his hair .

BMW does have *slow* cars
for example the 316 and 318 (those are the cheapest ones ... probably the one the kid drove)
any other decent car is faster than those
(i assume these are engines for the european market only)

most of the time you can do a test-drive on your own
only at mercedes there was a sales rep that got in the car with me ... "he knew the good spots to test all kinds of terrain" (so he said hehe)
however he said not to hold back, just see what the car has to offer.

I remember like 10 years ago, when the Fiat Coupe come out (car sucks, but a very good engine for that time) they came with a test-car to my parents house, the sales car allowed me to take it for a spin on my own. man, I peeled off like a mofo

I think if you go to a Ferrari dealer and you're there with a $100K benz or something similar, they'll let you drive one ... if you're there with crappy car they'll probably ask you to leave or make up some excuse

It was not a question of the prestanda of the cars but the way that kid looked in his car

Like he owned the world and no fucking Ford would take him down LOL!

I also want to say the freeway was fairly low on traffic at this point so I would not have done this if it where crowded

And afterall it was up to the kid if he wanted to race I just gave im the option ;)

It amazes me how many people were quick to jump on the "No way a Ford could beat a BMW" bullshit. Generally BMW doesn't make fast cars. It makes comfortable cars for rich, fat, old people. With the exception of the M3, the new M5 and the motor in the McLaren they are slow as shit.

The Ford Mondeo is indeed a nice car. Would of been nice if they sold it in Canada or the States. Instead they sell other crappy 115hp cars. I've seem a Ford Mondeo once in real life at the part. It was imported from europe with a european license plate

Private sales the owner goes with you when you test drive. When you buy from a car yard, you usually will be able to take it out on your own.

Maybe familiarity (and the absence of the cachet of a high price tag) breeds contempt in many, but I confess to being something of a Ford fan.

I grew up not far from the Lotus factory in the east of England, which used Ford engines to power their cars for many years (perhaps still do for all I know). Later as a teenager, I fantasized more about Carroll Shelby's cars than Ferraris. And when I first got interested in Formula 1, it was Ford who had the most trophies on their shelves (they only lost the #1 position fairly recently and that after being out of the sport for several years). Ford were always at or near the top in the World Rally championships too and if memory serves, Ford cars and Ford engines haven't done too shabbily in Stateside racing...?

And if you wanted really exotic back in the 60's, there was the GT40 (http://www.fordvehicles.com/fordgt/time_line.asp) which looked at least as good as anything to come out of Italy and won Le Mans 4 years running. It was one of the earliest mid-engined sports cars and came about because in the early 60s Henry Ford negotiated to buy Ferrari, but was turned down. Feeling insulted, Henry decided to build his own race cars and beat Ferrari. He did that in style and also took a stake in DeTomaso (http://www.panteraplace.com/) for a while.

Okay, I have to grant that no romance surrounds the Ford name and you certainly wouldn't call too many Fords sexy. But I had a string of RS-/Cosworth-/XR-badged Fords and enjoyed every one of them. In comparison, I kept a Dino 246 for less than 6 months. It was great for posing in, but a pain in the ass to live with.
