Airport improvement fee is (at YVR) has to be almost 5 years old now (or more?).

Toronto, Vancouver and most other major Canadian airports have them, the smaller airports are usually only $5.

The whole security fees are new (since 911).

The taxes are going down though.

I remember booking a flight for $90 ($45/ea way) and after taxes and fees it was $195. Still an amazing deal for the route, but lots of fees.

Over 3 billion and counting.

The fees are to pay for upgrades. All airports in Canada were turned over to local airport business groups; No more government handouts. They have to pay their own way now and pay the feds rental fees.

Toronto was just rated as the 2nd most expensive airport to fly into in the world. Most of the fees you see are hidden at airports in the states.

Thats because the U.S. customs and immigration pre-clear passangers in Canada before they board the plane and not when they land back in the states.

That's Air Canada, I never sent you a link to that. My flight was $36/direction. Once you add the taxes and such, it worked out to $175 return.

A few years ago I'd been in Vancouver for a few weeks and I was flying out - I had a bunch of Canadian money left, so I spent it on crap at the airport.

Then I get to some checkpoint thing and they tell me I have to pay this airport improvement tax after I've already spent all my money.

Right on, I'm at that hotel as well and one of my friends is staying there too. Half the price of the Holiday Inn and 4.5 star hotel, much nicer

Those charges drive me nuts. I got 4 tickets to LA using airmiles so the tickets are free.... BUT the damn surcharges, taxes etc came to $711 !!! It's even worse if you are making a short hop like Edmonton to Vancouver. The surchages sometimes come to more than the ticket. Insane.
