It's all a matter of opinion. I have one and frankly, I don't think it looks trashy. It's fairly small and in a place where I can cover it if I want to, or show it if I so choose (back shoulder blade). I put a lot of thought into what I got and it has sentimental meaning. I'll suffer no embarrassment when I'm 80.
On the other hand, I agree they can look trashy. A friend of mine has a large one on each shoulder blade, one on her wrist, her ankle, one on her lower back and she's planning on getting yet another one. She's a great girl, but I think hers make her look like trailor trash. A large naked fairy isn't something I'd want to walk around with when I'm old.
But with that being said, I think it's rather stupid to lump every tattooed female into one stereotype. That's no different than saying all men are pathetic shit stains or that people who replace the letter "s" with a "z" in their names are retards.

tattoos on women limit the girl's opportunities throughout the rest of her life (much more so than tattoos on a guy)
from an economic perspective it's just about the worst thing she can do to herself.
statistically speaking it will:
1. limit her income, because some employers will choose a non-tattooed person over an otherwise equal job candidate
2. if she is a model, many people will specifically not hire a girl with tattoos, because in general the pix do not sell as well
3. limits her marriage choices---sure, the tow truck driver will marry her, but the doctor will probably not---and this situation tends to impact the life quality and living conditions of any children she might have.
4. brands her as a member of a lower socioeconomic group---about the same as branding her forehead with the message "i don't know who my daddy is, but momma raised my up good in the trailer park"
